OK, here's my dilemma...
I am considering adding a 301 receiver to my existing 721 setup. DISH tells me I need to do one of the following:
1) Buy the Quad LNB from them for around $150 plus the 301 receiver for another $100
or
2) Buy a refurbished 301 with the Quad LNB for $69 from DISH and let them install it to my existing system
But, why can't I just go out and buy a 301 with a Dish 500 for $200 and then just activate it as my second receiver via DISH for $5 a month? I would save $50 overall and have brand new equipment.
As long as you can install it yourself your idea is valid and you don't mind having two dishes. Actually if you currently have a Dish Pro Twin which you should have with a 721 you should be able to add a DP-34 switch for $119 and you could buy the remanufactured 301 for $69 and not have to install a second dish. Seeing you have a 721 I hope you have the $1.99 extended warranty, if you do the reman 301 would be automatically covered under it.

I'm not that familiar with switches, what exactly will that do for me, as opposed to having the Quad LNB?
The used 301 comes with the Quad LNB.
Yes, I bought into the $1.99 warranty after my 721 took a dump in the first 8 months of owning it.
Thanks,
DP-34 is 3 inputs to 4 outputs.
What is on your dish 500 now? I was able to get a quad from 18in dish for $75 back a few mo ago.
