Transponders

I was playing around with my UTV this morning, doing a system check, etc.
Ran the signal strength test for transponders 1 - 11. Transponder 1 was 93% on both tuners. Most of the others were around 95% and a couple were 97%. Good strong signals. Question is, do you tell the receiver what transponder to use? Does it automatically use the strongest signal. I don't really understand how transponders work in this application, nor how many are actually there as I quit testing with number eleven.

You have no control of what transponder is used, because all of them are used. Your receiver knows which channel is an which transponder and selects that TP when you tune a certain channel. In fact DirecTV can play around with the channel map. One day USA (242) may be on one TP and next week it could be another. It's all transparent to the user.
