View Full Version : Providing OTA plus 2 E* feeds with only two wires at TV

I've searched this forum and found some great information on diplexers and splitters, but I am still a little confused. So, I'd like to run my setup plan by you and get your feedback, if you don't mind...

Currently, I have a Dish 500 with DP twin LNBF on my roof. There are two wires from it into a closet upstairs in the house. These then go directly from the closet to a 721 receiver downstairs. Then, I deliver the 721 video output via the s-video connection, and deliver the audio via a toslink connection -- to a TV next to the receiver.

Additionally, I have an old TV upstairs. I only have two coax outlets behind the downstairs TV, so to get the image upstairs, I have been using an A/V modulator box set that I got on clearance at the rat shack. This modulates the signal to a telephone cable, which then goes through my phone hub in the closet, and eventually to the outlet behind the upstairs TV, where it is demodulated from the telephone line and then remodulated for channel 4 (it's a really, really old TV). I use the 721 remote to control the receiver through the walls.

This setup works great.

Very soon, I will be getting an HDTV for downstairs, and I would like to receive OTA HD channels using the new TV's built in ATSC decoder. However, I cannot get good signal reception from downstairs. I can get good reception from the upstairs closet, so that is where I have placed an antenna.

The question: How do I get the OTA antenna signal PLUS the two dish signals to the downstairs TV with only two outlets in the wall downstairs? Running a third cable is an absolute last resort.

I've read through the diplexer and splitter related posts on here and think I have come up with a solution for my situation... Can I simply use two diplexers? One in the closet upstairs which would combine the antenna with one of the dish wires, and one just prior to one of the 721 receiver's tuner inputs which would split the signal back out?

I've drawn up some diagrams to illustrate my setup... Note that they are a little bit more detailed in that I show a splitter before the first diplexer to allow the upstairs TV to also get OTA reception.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

yes, this will work. I combine a Antenna input using diplexers from Trek outside my home and have another diplexer split the output just before the cable plugs into the receiver
hope this helps

sneakymoose (are moose really that sneaky? :))

I think your schematic should work. Keep in mind that you're going to lose some signal due to the splitter and the diplexors.

Great! Thanks to both of you! I think I'll go ahead and order 1 more diplexer (I bought just one and then realized I didn't know how to properly split the signal back out)...

I ran over to Radio Shack tonight but was surprised to see that they charge $22 for an RCA branded diplexer. Crazy. I figured they'd ask $5 or so at a place like that, but $22? They probably cost $0.20 to manufacture.
