I have a DTivo and OTA for locals. On my main tv I watch locals on regular stations and the DTivo on Video 1 (DVD on Video 2). I have to physically shut off the DTivo to watch the OTA channels on this tv. My second tv is a regular Hughes director and I watch sat on channel 3 and OTA on regular channels but do not have to shut off the receiver. Is this the way that the diplexers work or is the one on the DTIVO bad? I would pull my other to test it but the mess of cables and what not for the second tv that is mirrored and has the diplexer and two splitters there is no way that I will unhook that rat's nest again.
thanks,
matt

Ok when you use the hughes box do you push the input button on the remote to switch to local ota signals? if so that is why the box has basically a built in modulator in it and when you change the input on the box it will switch inside just like an a/b switch sorry thats what i meant to say not modulator. Where as the tivo does not have this feature and if the ant runs into the tivo then out to the tv you would have to shut the tivo off or standby to watch ota.

No I don't push anything on the remote for the hughes, just change the channel from 3 to what ever I want.

Does the OTA wire run into the back of both boxes to ant. in?Even with a diplexer in line running the OTA to the ant in you should still have to turn the ird off because it does interfere with OTA signals.Unless the other tv is picking up the OTA signals better. That is the only time i have seen when you do not have to turn off the box.

Yes, they both go to the ANT in. The wiring for the second tv (the one that doesn't need to be turned off) can be found here:

On the DTivo I believe that it is the SAT A cable that I put the Diplexer on. Otherwise it is wired as normal.

Ok from what i see in the picture is that yes you have the diplexer out to sat. in with ant. out going to a splitter and then to the box and to another tv is this correct? if this is the case then you are bypassing the box in essence and the OTA wont be interfered with so basically your diplexer is good its just the way you integrated the sat. and ant signals after the box by the looks of the diagram.

Thanks. It sounds like I will just save the $ and turn off the DTivo. Just looking for an easy way out :)

That would be the best bet or since you are useing aux. input on the tv for the tivo take the OTA wire to the rf connection on the tv and that will eliminate the problem as well, then you can leave the tivo on as usual.

Cannot use RF. I have a VCR hooked to that (channel 3). I know, I just need a TV with more inputs :)

Sure you can run the OTA wire into the vcr first since you use the tivo for dbs recording I mean how often do you record from the tivo to the vcr? just ask yourself that and weigh the pros and cons
