You guys think I need to use a preamp for signals 52 miles away?
With a/c power or not?

Depends on how good an OTA antenna you have. I'd go without it at first, then add it if needed.

You can set up a Fringe area antenna without a preamp and try the reception, if it is not all you want you can add a distribution amp to improve the signal without having to drop the mast and antenna to add the preamp. This is not quite as good as putting the amplifier right at the antenna but sometimes is much easier. My antenna is about 45-50 miles from the broadcast towers on a tower changing it is a major ordeal but going into the attic and adding an amplifier where it inters the attic is much easier and worked for me.

The Wineguard Chromestar 2000 works well and includes an pre-amp and an amplifier.
