In a civil case that ended late last week in South Carolina federal court, three individuals were found to have illegally intercepted satellite TV signals, and now each face fines of up to $10,000 plus punitive damages.
According to reports, two South Carolina residents were found by a federal jury of violating federal laws prohibiting the illegal reception of satellite TV signals and distributing illegal devices for the illicit reception of satellite TV. A third defendant was found liable only for the illegal reception of satellite TV.
The trial involved civil action only, and none of the defendants faced criminal charges. Also during the proceedings, the federal judge presiding over satellite TV piracy cases dismissed similar suits against two others, saying the evidence wasn't strong enough.
The judge will hold hearings in the next few weeks to determine penalties for the three found in violation of the satellite TV theft laws.
