Utah Gov. Olene Walker told a press gathering in Salt Lake City that a repeal of the state's tax on cable and satellite TV faces significant hurdles in the Utah Senate, which is looking at all revenue options to shore up the state budget.

She recently told reporters, "I imagine that at the end of the session, when legislators are looking for revenue, they will be sweeping the corners."

Utah Sen. Leonard Blackham echoed the same sentiment to Utah's Deseret News. "We're short of funds and we need cash," he told the paper. "If we take it out of the budget, there will be a lot of difficulties."

Last week, the Utah House passed a measure that would strip the cable/satellite tax. The action follows a summer ruling from the Utah Tax Commission that stated federal law forbids local entities to impose a tax on satellite TV, a provision that was part of the original state cable/satellite tax law.
