Satellite TV companies raising prices again
DirecTV, Dish say programming costs have been going up

For the second consecutive year, the nation's two largest satellite TV providers are planning to increase the prices for many of their popular packages.

Hughes Electronics' DirecTV is raising the rates of its main packages by $1 to $3 per month in March, or 3 to 9 percent.

Echostar Communications' Dish Network is keeping some prices steady, raising others by a few cents and increasing others by $3 per month starting Sunday. On average, a spokesman said the increase works out to 1.7 percent.

In addition, the satellite TV providers maintain rates haven't risen as much as cable prices over the past few years. Comcast, for instance, recently raised rates in the Bay Area by an average of 6 percent, nearly double DirecTV's increase and more than triple Dish's rate hike.

In addition, DirecTV points out that it has increased rates in only four of the past 10 years, while local cable providers typically raise their rates annually.
