View Full Version : Info on Digital Camera????
I know you guys can help me on this..... I'm the ebay guy at my job and I was wondering if you guys can recommend a good digital camera..... The one we are using seems to blur on closeup shots (its an old sony)..... We want one that can plug in the USB and can zoom in on the item..... We are selling the heck out the property but would like to improve our pics...... any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated......
One more thing, we would like to keep the price under 200.00 if possible....

Search on ebay for a used Nikon CP-990. It's a 3MP camera with a great macro function for close shots.
Here's a nice closeup for you to look at

and another

Both taken with the CP-990

I am thinking of getting one as well, but I want to know if it is worth it. I am going to be taking pics of outside and inside, so I'd need one that can adapt. I really don't know much about pictures, but enjoy a lot of scenery and wanted to make a lot of the views I can experience permanent(online and in a photo, I mean)
So, what's a good kind? What kind of money should I expect to shell out for a decent one?

I guess it depends on what you want to do. I just bought a new Canon Digital Rebel which is the first "reasonable" cost digital SLR (6 MP). It comes with an 18-55mm lens, but can use a variety of interchangable lenses. I added a 75-300mm lens to the kit and with the two can do just about anything. I still have the camera I recommended above, but, while that was a great camera in it's day, and would be good for the original poster's purposes (in fact more than good), it had it's limits. I like taking pix of lightning. The CP-990 would do a good job, but got noisy VERY fast. I couldn't keep the shutter open more than a couple of seconds in a nighttime shot before it was not usable. I have taken several 20 second exposures with my new camera with little noise problem. Ah, technology. We have had no lightning storms here since I bought it, so I don't know how it will work for that, but it should be quite good. I got my Digireb with the stock lens at a local shop for $940, which is less than the CP-990 cost when it was new a few years ago. The nice thing about the Digital Rebel is that you can add to it as time goes on. The pictures I mentioned in another thread that are haning in the local museum were taken with the CP-990. I'll post some of my new ones when time permits.
More info: If you plan on doing sports shots or fast moving shots check your prospective camera's shutter lag. The CP-990 would open the shutter about a half a second AFTER you push the release button (typical of a camera of that vintage). My new camera is intant, just as a regular camera.

You might want to check out this link: http://www.dpreview.com./ On the left-hand side is a "cameras" link to various (I think all) brands of currently manufactured and older models. By hunting around you can find test reports, probably more than you want to know, about some of the major players. All of the cameras have pluses and minuses. It just depends on what is important to you; color fidelity, compactness, zoom, card format, etc.
I purchased an Olympus C-750 in June and I am quite pleased with it. It is fairly small and has a 10X OPTICAL zoom (forget digital zoom) and is 4.3 MP using the Xd card format. It now goes for about $550 but you can accessorize it later with wide angle and telephoto lenses, add-on flash, etc.

ER.. great site. I should have mentioned it also. I go there nearly every day (when time permits).

Picked up a Canon Powershot G5 this month. I've been very happy with it.
Good solid camera with lots of features, especially if you don't want to pay the price of an SLR at this time.
