I have been a Dish Network customer since 1997, and I am thinking about calling up Dish and upgrading my equipment to the new DHA plan, taking a Dish DVR and 3 other recievers (Total of 4 hookups)

I just moved, haven't called Dish and told them I moved yet (only been a few days) so the professional install will be a big bonus for me. I can do this two ways, I can order as a "new" subscriber, as the old equipment is in my parents name and not mine, or I can just upgrade on the current account.

Is there anything I should be aware of before I do this, any catches or problems I should know about?

Your help is appreciated!

I'd go with new equipment as a new subscriber. They get all the breaks. So, go for it!

If i were you, i'd get a club dish card from your parents account and just get a new dha account. upgrading the new one isnt really worth it.

Well, if I subscribe as a new subscriber, I'm cancelling the old account my parents had. (I took it over). The only thing is I'm going to lose my Kansas City locals, as I was grandfathered in when I couldn't get Topeka OTA. Where I live now I can get ABC, CBS, NBC OTA, as FOX is in-and-out (my local FOX actually is a Wichita station)

2nd Question....

This "dual tuner" in the DVR... does that basically mean I can record one program while watcing another?

By signing up as a DHA customer you will be given the 522 model DVR receiver which has two tuners and yes that means you can record one thing and watch another thing. Be aware to tell the installer this is the setup you want, ie two tuners for one tv set, otherwise you can have one tuner to one tv and the other tuner to another tv thus having two DVR's one oon each tv each independent of the other....but in this scenario you cannot watch one thing and record another.

Well, I called Dish Network today and they said I could not get DHA as a current subscriber... so I called back and signed up as a new customer and got all set.

I'm getting 2 DVR 522's and they will run 4 televisions in the house. They also submitted a waiver to get distant channels for me (I get CBS & ABC fine with antenna, PBS & NBC are iffy... and FOX is non-existant)

The thing about FOX, the local fox station for me is KAAS 18 in Salina, KS, which is a satellite of KSAS 24 in Wichita, which is available on Dish Network... but I doubt they will let me get it since I live in the "Topeka DMA" and the "Topeka DMA" FOX station is a LP... I'll get that waiver.. but forced to get probably Chicago :(

2 522's I thought the limit was one 522 as far as I understand you might want to call and double check that you're not getting a 522/322 setup

This is streight from the retailer business rules:
"Eligible System Configurations: The following system configuration guidelines apply to all new DHA customer activations:
• There is a $5 per month rental fee for each receiver beyond the first.
• Eligible models include new and reconditioned 811, 522, 510, 322, 311, 301, and 111 receivers.
• Maximum of four tuners. Up to four total receivers if all are single-tuner receivers.
• Maximum of two dual-tuner receivers (322/322 or 522/322) per new account.
• Maximum of one (1) 522 dual-tuner receiver per new account.
• Maximum of two (2) 811 model receivers per new account."

If you do indeed get 2 522s I'd love to hear back from you just to see another way how DISH is beepin their dealers. And if you wouldnt mind droping me your account info so I could have some proof to back up my claim.

Install is set for Thu. Feb. 19... between 8:00-12:00

I might have to eat my words here, as I didn't realize the 322 was a dual-tuner device. I could have swore she said 2 522's but I'm not going to hold my breath, as my prior dealings with CSR's...

I know I'm getting a DVR, and a second dual-tuner reciever to run 2 other tv's... so I probably get the 522/322 system.

If I do get two 522's first I'll throw a party, then I will let you know.

Let us know how they wire up the TVs and where they put the receivers. RF/coaxial is a poor connection method and s-video or composite is preferred.

I would imagine two of the tv's will be on coax... the TV's that will be connected that way are nothing special, just a Sanyo 19" and a Orion 13" (In the Kitchen)

My main TV is a 27" Sanyo which does really well, but something is wrong witht he S-Video, as everything I have ever hooked up to it turns black & white. So I guess I'll be stuck with the RCA Cables.

The chroma signal isn't coming through but the luma signal is. Sounds like a damaged connector, in all liklihood (IMHO, others may have more of an idea...)

HAHA... this post is old... from like February.

That 27" TV what was always black and white on S-Video, well the picture tube went out of it back in June. We now have a brand new 31" television from Sears. It looks really good. In fact, all the pictures on all the tv's look really good. I'm on my 3rd, coming Tuesday probably my 4th 522 box. One problem after another I swear....

Keep in mind that if you use the SVideo, you should unplug the yellow RCA cable. If you have both lugged in, it can cause a lot of the problems you are mentioning. Most TVs will try to overlap the signals and will get goofy.

Larry's last is applicable IF you're trying to get signal from both AT THE SAME TIME - such that both the S-Video and the composite video are both "Video 1". There is no problem if S-Video is Video 1 and the composite is Video 2, or 3 as on my 27 inch Sony.

True. My point was that a lot of people will see that yellow wire unplugged, and plug it in to the same port and their TV gets screwy. That's why I always point it out if I hook it up. Saves on tech support later.
