is the dial-up connection absolutely necessary? can i hack the tivo to use ethernet?

To my knowledge and someone help me here if I'm wrong, the stand-alone Tivo has adapters. They don't work on the DirecTV Tivo though.

Series 1 models of both the Stand alone and DirecTivo are easily hacked by adding in a turbonet card.

Series 2 stand alones have USB build in and active and you can get a USB ethernet adapter.

Series 2 DirecTivo's are the strange one in that the USB ports are not active. They *can* be hacked but are a lot harder to do so. More informaiton then you'd ever want would be in the Underground forums at the Tivo Community.... www.tivocommunity.com

Note that for DirecTiVos, guide data is sent over the satellite, so few people bother hooking them up to networks.
