View Full Version : Want HD, will I be able to see the right birds?

I am currently locked in on 110 and 119 west. At the time my dish was installed these were the only 2 I could hit, due to a tree in the line of sight. I did have to perform some surgery on the tree, and cut away some branches, so I'm concerned about which birds I need to be able to receive if I want HD.

The help I am asking for is, in relation to my current dish pointing at 110/119, when I have a 2nd dish installed, which others do I need to be able to receive, and where are they?

I am having a tech come out next week to install a 2nd dish which is technically for the additional local channels I'm not receiving currently. But before he comes out, and before I buy a 921 to get HD, I would like to get an idea of where the other birds are in the sky. If they are to the left of were my dish is looking, I'm probably going to have problems, if to the right, depending on height I should be ok. The best spot I have is high and right. Left is completely blocked by the tree aforementioned, and right and low there is another tree.

I recall from some of the discussions here that some HD is on 110, so that works in my favor yes? But what other one(s) do I need to be able to get for all the HD now and future?

I hope this is enough information to give me a rough idea on positioning. Won't be much reason to get HD if there's no chance of seeing the proper bird :)

I believe that Echostar has moved most of the HD programming to 110 and 119 to support the installed base of Dish 500's. You shouldn't have any problems getting all core HD programming using your Dish 500. The superdish is being repositioned as a product to receive locals in areas that aren't carried on 119 or 110.

HD is on 110
CBS-HD is on 61.5 & 148...I dont think this is moving

As for where new HD is going...it could be 110, 121, 61.5, 148..we dont know

ok, so sounds like I'm covered for current HD, woot! but, without sounding stupid I hope, what the heck is superdish? I keep reading references to it, yet I have no idea what it refers to. Is it something having to do with the extra local channels I don't receive right now? I get all my main locals, but I don't get a bunch of off the wall, almost public TV channels. Ones that would seem to be UHF if I were using a standard antenna.

Standing at your dish looking south, 61.5º would be to the left.

Is there a possiblility of mounting a dish further West on your property? I had a left hand tree problem and ended up putting the second dish about 15ft to the west and 10ft further south to shoot around. Type your zipcode in the dish aiming screen and use a compass to see if there is any reasonable place to get line of sight. It is a long shot for you, but also check 148º on your screen (it may be below the horizon, looking west/right from your dish).

It does appear from recent tests that we MAY see new HDs on the wings. 105º is also a possibility (but probably not until end of year). 105º is just a little bit left of 110º, so they will probably have to move your dish a foot or two west if the tree is that close. SuperDish is the dish that will get you 119º/110º and either 105º or 121º on one dish.

Even E* doesn't know where they are going with new HD. That's why they are testing!

SuperDish is allowing Dish Network to add more local areas. It allows you to see 3 sports (110, 119, 121 or 105, 110, 119)

When they originally were bringing out SD, 105 was going to be for locals and 121 was for HD..
they they scrapped HD on 121 and was going to put Int'l there..
Then they found out SD 105 doesnt work on the coasts or in Northern States (MN, ND, SD, UP of MI, South FL, etc)...

So now 121 & 105 are for locals
121 is for some Int'l (most of it is still at 61.5)
and they have no clue where HD is going

CBS HD is at 148, at least where I live. Everything else at 110. Good luck!

Ok you'll love this.

This morning the installer was suppose to put in the extra dish, and at the time, I was going to ask about having a sw34 put in since I'm waiting on a 921.

Due to sleet/freezing rain all last night, everything around DC is iced over this morning, so of course there won't be an install. So I call the company doing the install, reschedule for Thur.

It's about then I started this thread :) I started calling some local shops besides the one I'd ordered my 921 from just to see if anyone had them. One shop took the time to help me understand where bird 61 is, and that it's much higher in the air, which should solve my tree problem by itself. Then the topic of the sw34 came up, and that the installer would not need it for just adding the 2nd dish unless I had 3 receivers.

So I call back the installers, let them know I need a sw34 when they come because I have a 921 on order. Their response..... out of stock!!!! :D doh!

But it gets better :P

so I tell them, that's fine, I don't expect to have the 921 for 3 or 4 weeks, everyone has them backordered. Hang up.

Hello..... hi this is <place I ordered 921 from>, returning your call. Funny that you called, I was just about to call you to let you know the 921's are in. DOH!!!!

So now I can go get the 921, but might not have a sw34 to get it installed with!

so call back the installers, they hope to have more 34's next week before they come. so Looks like I'll be running a single receiver house for a week hahaha

But hey, at least I'll have my 921 now!!! (God, please let it be one of the ones that works correctly :D )

Not quite, but close:

First channels on 105 were all HDs and locals.
First channels on 121 were all Internationals. (No locals.)

Problems with 105 led to several locals being moved to 121, and more locals being added to 121. Charlie mentioned internationals at 121 on one of the chats saying the programmers "liked their neighborhood" on the wings.

All 105 HDs except the CBS-HDs are now on 110, and only a few new international channels have been turned over to subscribers on 121.

The future is unclear, but I'm sure E* will let us know after they have figured it out!

here's more fun :)

picked up the 921 saturday afternoon. Only have 2 lines coming down from the dish, so I take a spare cable (was installed to carry cable a while back) and connect it to tuner 2. Downstairs is where the cables come into my house, and where the other TV is. So I take the cable from the other TV and connect it to this spare cable with a sw21. go upstairs, and get the tuners all setup and start the software upgrade.

After this, wife gets home, starts complaining she can't watch anything downstairs. I'm like, ok let me try something. I grab a splitter, and try to split that single feed to both tuners. Well, talk about interesting.

119 seems to sync up fine, though at a lower strength than if only 1 is connected to the splitter. 110 seems to not want to come in at all if both are plugged in. So if I have both the 921 tuner 2 and the 301 working, I get only some channels :) For example, I'm upstairs, watching HBOHD, with it recording, and try to change to a local station, no sat sync. doh! but try hbo-e and it syncs right up. So now, if I want to record to programs at once, or record and watch another, I'm playing a game of cable connections until the installers come with my 2nd dish and sw34 :) haha
