what is the difference between always on and switched outlets???

Switched outlets are activated when a device (say a receiver) is turned on. Always on outlets are, always on.

Anything with a timer (e.g. VCR) should have continuous power. Ditto for your
DBS receiver. I went with a Monster Power unit (got a 21# cat sitting on me or I'd give you the model number) and it's a combination of clean, stable power with outlets that can be programmed for switched or always on. For high end equipment, you want both.

Switched outlets are activated when a device (say a receiver) is turned on. Huh ? ?

All my surge protectors (mostly Panamax) the 'switched' outlets are controled by the switch (on/off) , and the 'always on' are always on.

Huh ? ?

All my surge protectors (mostly Panamax) the 'switched' outlets are controled by the switch (on/off) , and the 'always on' are always on. The newer model PANAMAXes can have their switched outlets activated by a control voltage from an A/V receiver, projector, RC system, keypad, etc.

The earlier models had a seperate AC cord that could go in a switched outlet on a preamp or receiver (plugged into an "Always On" outlet) to acheive the same purpose.

I have an old MAX 1000 for my LR system. The AC control cord is plugged into an X-10 gadget that is activated by RF from a key-ring type device. When I walk in my front door I press the "ON" button on my key-ring doohickey and it turns on my HT system.
