i have searched and searched and searched (when i've had the time) from work and CANNOT find a site that explicitly shows you how to change your directivo series 2 unit to communicate with whatever it needs to communicate with via network/ethernet and NOT via modem. Granted, the tivofaq.com/hack site probably woudl work but my job BLOCKS that site for some reason through our coporate firewall.

I do not have a phone line in my house, and don't plan on it. I have the opportunity to fall into a free tivo unit from directv and would really like to do it..but i do not want to have a phone installed just to have this work. can anyone please either provide me a link that actually shows where this information is or can someone email me with the instructions? I would really appreciate it.

thanks

I have not see a way to enable a DirecTivo box to use the USB port vs. the modem for it's call back to home. I know I'd like to have that like my Replays did. Have you researched using a service like Vonage (voice over IP) to get you the phone connection without having to actually have a phone line installed?

The series 2 DirecTivo needs some major hacking to work over ethernet since the USB ports aren't even enabled. You really only need a phone line for the intial setup and software download. After that you only need it for any other software upgrades or if you want to order PPV.

The Voip solution might be a good idea but I haven't researched whether or not it works.

voip is very expensive to implement...its cheaper just to get a phone line but my house (believe it or not )...is old and the phone copmany would charge an arm and a leg to install a phone line with no existing jack and i dont want my brand new just remodeled bedroom to have any holes drilled into the wall etc...

well that bites ! i know there must be SOMETHING i can do

Well, you can have the line installed somewhere else in the house and just stretch a long phone cord into the room just for software updates and such. The only thing the box will do is bug you about once month but you won't lose any functionality. Or you could use a wireless phone connection.

If you already had a broadband connection, which I assume you do since you're asking about using a network for the connection, services like Vonage or Packet8 are reasonable. Packet8 for example has a $19.95/month plan, activation is $29.95 and they provide the hardware.

If it's just to get a phone line to your bedroom, can you put a phoneline anywhere in your house? I ask since there's phone line extenders that work over your inhouse poweline wiring. Here's an example from Radioshack: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F008%5F008%5F001%5F004&product%5Fid=43%2D160

now this is interesting..everyone keeps touting the voIP solution but most Kb's for these services specifically tell you that they WILL NOT work with data or fax calls!

this is really sucking!
