Cablevision said its months-old DBS service VOOM had 1,627 customers that were installed and receiving service as of the end of February.
The company said none of the VOOM customers have yet been billed for service since they are getting the product through a special trial period.
Recently, VOOM signed a number of key programming arrangements, and the service has improved its technical performance. The Cablevision company said it's undertaking a measured increase in marketing efforts and is testing a variety of pricing alternatives.
Company officials also said VOOM will have a DVR product ready sometime in the third quarter.
Cablevision's satellite services division reported an operating loss of $54.9 million in the fourth quarter, attributable to costs associated with the launch of the VOOM service including marketing, administration, high-def channel development and systems integration expenses. These costs were not offset by any revenues.
Cablevision and its Rainbow DBS unit launched VOOM on Oct. 15.
The company said it expects to file documents by the second quarter to spin off the satellite operations, and expects to complete the spin off later this year.
