Is there still a special offer for a 510? I think there had been an offer for $100 or free with two year committment and direct bill on credit card.

Don't do it! Going from UTV to a 510 will disappoint you and especially your wife :)

Karl, thanks. I was inquiring for my father in law. I can't get him to switch to D* and DTivo but I think he would really like a DVR. And a 510 would probably be easier for him than the Tivo anyway.

We have the 510, and got the free deal last month. Not sure whether it is still in effect. Try calling and asking.
As for the 510, it is a solid machine. We think it's great. I do not understand this TIVO chauvanism. I suspect it's mostly much ado about a few minor advantages. You know, people hanging on to old technology.
Well in that category, the 921 has it all over the ancient TIVO SD boxes. Imagine NOT being able to record HD. That is sooo 2003!
I have watched the Duke-Carolina game three times since last Saturday. Oh did I mention that it is an HD recording, that is - High Definition! What a game! And in HD, I felt like I was 18 again and back in Cameron. Oh those were the days...

Well they did not offer me the free deal when I was eligible for it last month. Basically they are telling me that the deal has expired and that I am out of luck. That really ticks me off. If I would have known about it I would have taken the deal.

Sorry, my post was misleading. I ordered the 510 in January based on a post at this site. They installed it last month - Feb. It has probably been discontinued for awhile. But, they'll come up with another promo at some point soon, I'd bet.

I had the same thing happen to me. I sent a nasty email to corp. about not being informed about offers as well as not being able to upgrade to a 322 or 522. I got a response and was able to at least get the 510 for $49 with a 1 yr commitment. Works great so far, except it is a pretty noisy box.

I picked up a 510 a couple of months ago. It's not as good as TiVo, but it works well enough. And it has its good points -- I like the UHF remote, the picture quality's as good on playback as it is live, and the hard drive's nice and big. I'm not complaining.
