View Full Version : Receiving Satellite and Cable Feeds over same Cable: Possible?
I am getting ready to have D* installed next week. I am going to maintain my cable modem and believe, as a result, will still have a cable signal coming to my house. Assuming this is true, will I be able to maintain the ability to watch either satellite or cable TV using the same wiring? My RG-6 cables in my home are all currently home-run to one location, including already having two coax drops and one phone drop in the both my main tv viewing location and master bedroom. If possible, I would like to maintain the ability to watch either satellite or cable TV.
Any information would be appreciated.

Yes with the use of diplexers. Piece of cake and cheap. Google Satellite Diplexer.
Radioshack has them too.

Better check that you really will still be getting the cable tv channels first. A co-worker here had a cable-tv modem but no cable tv channels.
The tech experts will correct me, but here is how I am set up: TWC locals + modem, is split with regular cable splitter. Line 1 to Cable modem. (TWC said to do it that way.) Line 2 in to 3x4 multiswitch, along with two lines from single LNB dish. Two lines out (with combined signal) to DVR and two other single lines out to regular D* set top boxes (STB's.) Diplexer before each STB to split sat signal from cable signal, each into its proper input on D* STB.
Lousy analog signal with severe ghosting on ABC and CBS. Albany NY locals coming with 7s to be launched soon(?), so hopefully I can drop those locals.
Digital cable generally requires a separate STB, although some TV's are starting to appear with digital tuners built in. If you had a digital cable STB, you would diplex near your STB's. Sat line to sat box, cable line to cable box. You would need to have two separate inputs into your TV for the two feeds, or some sort of switch setup. When he analog cable signal goes through the sat box, it comes through on your coax line out from the sat box to the TV. (Cable channels did not appear when I ran only S-video or composite to TV.) Hope that helps.

I'm not a tech expert but try hooking your cable tv cable directly to a tv first and see what you get, if the picture is good you will have to narrow it down to the multiswitch or faulty diplexer. I had a similar problem and a $99 Motorola line amp solved the problem and reduced by internet outages substantially.
I'm positive someone will have better idea but this solved a similar problem for me.

The cable is being split four ways in the multiswitch which means each output has one fourth of the signal strength. You may need to add an amplifier before the multiswitch. Also, you only need the diplexer to extract the cable signal at the TVs that need it.
