I have the DISH 721 and I am very happt with it. But I really want to save the shows off the PVR, I don't see an easy way to do this with the 721. I have played the video and captured it to a PC, but I am having trouble with the audio (I can't get the SPDIF to work).
ReplayTV seems to have the ability to easily network with PCs to transfer shows and even use a PC to "act" like another ReplayTV unit to save and play shows.
I am thinking about jumping to the Replay. Are there any disadvantages? Do any of the Replay Units have DISH tuners? Or do I need to use some kind of IR blaster to change the channels?
Thanks

Nightmare: I have the replay 5040 model(40 gig drive), it is supposed to be very easy to upgrade the drive to a bigger one and add a second. I also have it networked with 2 pcs and use dvarchive to pull the shows from the replay to the pc's. There is a program called revue that will convert one of the replay mpegs to a dvd burnable mpeg. I have my replay hooked to my dish 6000u- downrezzed s-video and there are codes for the replay where you can use the blaster for your reciever. The guide is about a 9 day guide and I like it better than either my 501 or my 6001. The url for planet replay is

Does your Replay change the channels on the DISH PVR? Do you have an extra DISH receiver? Or are you just using it to offload the DISH unit? Do any of the replays have an Optical input for the audio? Or just L/R audio and S-Video?

Yes using a blaster wire (actually it had 2 ends for 2 seperate recievers or boxes) I use the component out from my 6000u to my tv(hd) and the svhs to my replay, the replay has component out(supposed to be progressive)svhs out and composite out. It has svhs in and 2 composite ins. It has optical out, but no optical in so only pcm stereo. Btw you can record dvds onto the replay box... you just cannot copy them onto anything else because of the macrovision. I also sometimes input from my panasonic dvd recorder to the replay (dvd-ram)
ps: you can also show photos on your replay and use as your screensaver.

It's not the 721, it's your capture card. Try a hardware mpeg2 capture. (like ADS)

I think its actually the NForce 2 Chipset. I read some stuff about it shutting the SPDIF input off during "Record". My only Non-Nforce chipset is only an AMD Athlon 750 and I don't know if its good enough to capture the video. I just want something easy :nono2:

Yea, I sell those at work. That one does not have the SPDIF input. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All-in-Wonder and eVGA FX5200 Personal Cinema for video capture (I have noticed they both put a grey line in the bottom of the screen) so I don't need the capture device, I need the SPDIF input on my Shuttle XPC (SN45G) to actually record the audio. I can watch the signal from the PVR through the PC onto the TV and I get video and AUdio. But as soon as I start to record the Audio Stops. :nono2: I have captured with the analog audio, but it sounds a little weird, kinda tin'e (not sure how to spell that, Tin, like the metal)

I just use S-video and L/R audio on my ADS and get a very good result,
it records it as an mpg file (mpeg2) which is easy to make dvd, svcd, or vcd or whatever
anyway the audio sounds very good & video is very good

322 Receiver needs software modification, to eliminate incompatibility issues with non Echostar DVR units!
Screen Saver with Dish network Logo and Text (Push Select to Continue) pops up and gets recorded by my ReplayTV 5040 after daily Dish Network Software update and or every 4 hours if no remote control button is pushed. This Logo stays on screen and renders my ReplayTV 5040 TOTALLY USELESS.
EXTREEMLY ANOYING and TOTALLY UNEXCEPTABLE
I never had these ridiculous problems with my ReplayTV 5040 and Cable Company!
After more than 2 days and several calls to Dish Network Tech support, I may or may not have workable solution.
Whether this solution works or not it is very poor workaround at best.
I currently have 8 reminder timers (1 every 3 hours) set to simulate remote control activity, in order to keep the 4 hour inactivity screen saver from activating. Due to software updating Daily at 4:00 AM I had to set additional timer at 4:10 AM to keep from having screen saver started after software update.
SUGESTION PLEASE EXPEDITE SOFTWARE MODIFICATION ON 322 RECEIVERS TO INCLUDE CHECK BOX.
[ ] DISABLE SCREEN SAVER
This would be much preferred to my current workaround that may or may not work.
