I'm thinking of switching from E to D. However, as an HDTVer with specific technical needs, I have a few questions about the above mentioned receivers.

1. Same model.
It appears that they are all made by the same company, which I will assume is Goldstar (LG=Lucky Goldstar). The only difference I can find between the three is the absence of RF remote capability and less attractive front panel of the Hughes. Is this correct? (OTOH, the lower price is like a couple of cocktails. It makes it look prettier.)

2. Outputs.
I understand the SD outs are now simultaneously hot, for easier VCR recording. However, it appears that the HD outs are NOT simultaneously hot, with a hard switch required between DVI/RGB and component! Is this true? (One member told me yes, another said no.) That is just a stupid feature, and possibly a deal-breaker for me, as I have both an HDTV and HD projector, and need an HD signal to both without having to reach behind the rack and switch. (DVI to TV, Component to PJ).

How about the DVI and RGB outs? I see in the manual it says "DVI output takes precedence". What does that mean exactly? If both outputs are connected, does only the DVI work? That would suck too! (My projector also has a VGA/RGB input, so I would be able to use it instead of component.)

My 811 has all outputs hot, which is really the proper thing to do.

3. Program Guide.
-Do locals remap to the correct local channel numbers in the guide? Or, do they stay at D's 3 or 4 digit assigned number?
-Is there a PIP option in the guide, so I can still watch what's on the current channel while I browse?

4. OTA:
-Do OTA digital channels appear in the guide with correct program info? (With E*, it just says "local digital", no program info.)
-Do OTA channels remap properly to their PSIP numbers, and stay there? (On my E* 811, a number of them revert to their actual frequency numbers.)
-Are there any issues when switching between OTA and the EPG or satellite channels? (The 811 often locks up, must re-download the EPG, or re-acquires the sat signal, when doing this. Time consuming and VERY annoying.)
-Does "last channel recall" work between OTA and satellite channels. (Another thing that doesn't work on the 811.)

5. Caller ID. Does it have name/number on-screen caller ID display? (My favorite feature of the 811.)

6. Bugs in general. Any other issues you can share would be nice. I haven't really heard of too many with these models, other than some occasional lockups. But, I'd love to hear your experiences.

I have the Hughes HTL-HD. I'll try to answer some of your questions.

1.) No RF remote.
2.) I don;t have my HDTV connected via DVI, BUt I can say that the component HD and th4e composite SD signals are live at the same time.
3.) I don't have my locals from DirecTV, but I would assume that the locals will get remapped to there actujal channels assignments.
4.) OTA channels do show up in the guide, but I have yet to see the program descriptions given for the digital channels. I do see them for the analog channels. I've read that PSIP has something to do with program descriptioon.
5.) No Caller ID.
6.) My unit has firmware version 1.06 and I have audio dropouts occasionally and a lockup now and then. The new version of firmware is supposed to fix these.

I hope this helps.

BTW, if you go through DirecTV you can get either the HTL-HD or the Samsung TS360 for $99. If you are a long time customer in good standing.

Since I'll be a new customer to D, that wouldn't apply to me. Maybe they'll offer the HTL-HD in a special new subscriber deal, once the HD Tivo is released.

I thought there was a version 1.07. How do they upgrade these things? One thing about E* is that they get the update out to everybody, as soon as it's released. (I guess they have to, since the some of their HW barely works out of the box.)

Some have shipped with 1.07. Mine came with 1.06. The next version is supposed to be 1.010.

Good luck on your quest for HD. Find the least expensive receiver until the HDTiVo is released.

Hi Gary I was about to ask the same question, we don't watch a bunch of TV during the summer months so I think I'm going to get an HTL-HD while waiting for the HD-Tivo demand to level off a bit, I predict huge eBay profits for those that are on a pre purchase list. I have a friend who is regional manager for a major CCretailer (oops) and I asked him for the inside on HDTivo he said there are going to be very strict sales policies on them to make sure they make it to the floor and my chances are slim until at least June. So in the mean time I can survive with my two existing Dtivos and use since the HDL has dual SD/HD outputs I can use my stand alone. Since the pricepoint of the HD tivo is greater than $800 which is a magical number in retail the HDL’s should hold their value fairly well in the 300-400 range at least until Xmas.
