I am considering the 522. If you run it in Single mode does it function as a dual recorder? I am not really interested in the second TV option as I am just to be able to watch something else while another program is recording.

I wish Dish would just make a simple dual DVR so people could change channels while recording another show.

I dont think the 522 can run in single mode...needs 2 lines from the dish

The single mode on the 522 is not yet available, it is supposed to be added to a future software release. From what I've heard, the 721 might be more along the lines of what you're looking for.

Your other option is to get the 522, run it in dual mode, but set the preferred recorder to TV2, so everything records on TV2 by default no matter what you're watching on TV1. (That's the setup I have currently)

Or you might do what a lot of DISH customers have been doing since Viacom. Switch to Directv and get a real DVR(TiVo) for only $99 it has two tuners upgradeable hard drives and works without reboots.

Oh boba, get off your Tivo high horse. ;) Don't want to start another thread that beats this one to death, and no offense to boba and all Tivo adherents, but jeez that junk gets old.

The 522 works well for many people. I am satisfied with mine. As long as you know going in that, at the moment, the unit is dual mode only, you know what you are getting. It's been reported that they will make it single mode sometime in the future, but if you can use it in single then it makes a fine DVR. My HDTV has multiple inputs, so I ran both tuners into separate inputs. I then set up tuner 2 to do most of the recording, and watch live on tuner 1. Works well for me and I am sure there are others as well who make good use of the 522.

Thanks for the Tivo info. I have set up Tivo Directv units for people and I do not care for the Tivo that much except for the name based recording. Dish's picture quality looks better than Directv to me so I do not really want Tivo. Another thing I notice on Tivo is that on big screen TV's 55 inch or higher, some channels look blurry with Tivo.

If you don't have a 2 TV system, Dish isn't likely to provide a 522. Assuming you obtain one, simply run coax from TV1 out to your TV and run RCA from TV2 to your TV. You than have dual tuner with choice of watching TV1 on channel 3/4 or TV2 on Line Input. I have 2 TV's but have #1 with this setup which is very nice.
