I'm wondering if they carry local channels in general.
That is a good question. Local Channels are a huge factor if one is deciding on getting Voom. I know I want to be able to see my locals for sure. And Direc Tv provides them for me.

Voom does not carry local channels. When they install your system, they also install a local OTA antenna so you can receive your local channels through the Voom receiver.

Why get your locals from sat? This is the biggest mistake they ever made. In doing so, they have crammed so many channels/transponder that the whole system is now suffering from loss of picture quality. Unless you live out of reach of an antenna, locals from sat are as useless as teets on a boar hog.
I get all of my locals OTA with the Voom box and their PQ is better than my Dish 6000.

A large percentage of the country cannot get the locals over the air. While most can recieve a few of thier channels OTA, not many get great reception of all their channels. When all the stations go FULL power digital it will probably help a lot.
The large antenna on the roof also has the spouse factor to consider...

I lucked out with my house, I have a very high pitched roof and the stations are all to the North of me and also to the North of me is a farm and my backyard, so nobody can even see my antenna. I mounted it to the side of the house and it extends up about 6' above the roofline but it is hidden from street view unless you really look for it. I have not seen another antenna in our new development but the dish to house ratio is probably 1 to 3 since our local cable is very expensive and very bad.
