View Full Version : Question: For locals on 105, how bad is rain fade?
My brother is hopefully going to receive Tupelo-Columbus, MS locals on E* sometime this year. They are establishing the uplink now, so I figure it won't be much longer before they are offered, especially since D* already has them up.
He is wondering about how bad rain fade will be on the locals, which I am betting will be on 105 when they are offered.
For those of you with the Superdish and pulling in locals on 105, what signal strengths do you see and what is the minimum value needed to maintain a watchable signal?
You may be wrong about the satellite it could be 121 which is new and much stronger signal. It also depends how long before DISH launches the locals the replacement for 105 is tenatively late this summer. Right now using a FSS satellite gives a little better resistance to rain fade, the frequency is a little lower so the wave lengths are longer and less prone to fade.
I figured that all markets that are properly in the footprint of 105, which MS is, would receive from 105 and all others would get locals from 121. I guess time will tell.

South Bend Indiana is 105, neighboring Fort Wayne Indiana is 121. Both are inside the footprint of 105 (arguably Fort Wayne receives more signal than South Bend). Your figuring does not follow.
Areas outside the 105 footprint will not be served by 105 until AMC-15 is online, which would put 105 or Dish500 locations in play. 121 can serve practically anywhere in the ConUS. We'll let you know where the channels show up. :D

i have super dish with greensboro locals and have only had rain fade once and i could barely open the front door thats how heavy it was
kwajr,
Thanks for the information. I had heard that rain fade could be an issue.
Just out of curiosity, what signal strength do you get on the 105 transponder that carries your locals?
Anything over 50 percent is an acceptable signal strength for the 105 signal.

Ku band signals are less affected by rain than DBS frequencies

If anyone with a Superdish is watching a national channel and looses signal switch over to a local channel and see if it's still on. Or if your local goes out then check a national channel like TNT and see if it's on.
Same goes for DISH 500 subs. Actually since the spot beams are double-powered, most of the time I will loose national channels but still get locals which I should be watching for weather reports anyway.
