What exactly is involved in adding ABC and NBC in HD? We have had CBS in HD on DISH for a while now but I'm really anxious to see Dish add the other networks in HD. I receive the Denver locals and at least NBC there is broadcasting in high definion. Im curious as to the quality of the HD on NBC. Anyone out there getting NBC HD OTA? Thanks.

KUSA is brodcasting their local news in HD but at this point it is studio cameras only.

The Denver HD situation is very sad. All of the network stations are low power. ABC in Denver (KMGH) is only 3000 watts from their studio roof.

Here is the best place for Denver HDTV information:

At the current time, Dish doesn't offer ABC-HD, NBC-HD, Fox-HD or WB-HD. I also live too far away to get all of my networks OTA...luckily I do get ABC(DT). In my opinion, Dish should be trying to get this for us..but I don't think its going to be available anytime soon. I've written Charlie about it a couple of times now..Hopefully he will address it sometime soon.

You can email by using the link for email Charlie at http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/customerCare/charlie_chat/index.asp

Let him hear that you want your network HD channels

Charlie has said several times on the Charlie Chats (next one is Monday night!) that he would love to be carrying the national HD feeds from NBC and ABC, but can't for a number of reasons - most importantly because NBC and ABC won't allow it.

More correctly, the local affiliates won't allow it. They have contracts with ABC & NBC that allow them to prevent it.

What local affiliates?? I don't have a local NBC, WB, or Fox in my area? Can you explain this a little further?

Codeman00 - what part of "because NBC and ABC won't allow it" do you not understand ?

I suppose you shoulld be eligible for Distant NBC and Fox, and be able to get the Superstation pack for WB, can't you ?

Let me explain a little further....I currently receive CBS-HD (distant) over Dish Network and CBS out of Chicago. I am lucky to also have an ABC (DT) in the city that I live in (which I can and do get via OTA)..but I have no way of picking up NBC, Fox, or WB over an antenna (OTA). I can't pull it in via OTA from Memphis. I can get those distant locals through Dish Network..but I already get those locals through cable and I would get them if I was offered the distant HD channel that corresponds with them. I want the distant networks so I can receive them in HD just like I do CBS-HD.

Apparently CBS allows it and Dish Network carries CBS-HD...why can't I get NBC-HD, Fox-HD, and WB-HD over Dish network if I subscribe for one of those (non-HD) networks through Dish?

Thats what I want Charlie to work on.

Hopefully that is a little more clear...sorry for the confusion.

Codeman00, and I'm telling you that Charlie HAS been working on it for the last couple of years, and is getting shut down by the networks. Is that any clearer? You need to file your complaints with the national offices of NBC and ABC.

They key there to what you said is that CBS allows it. ABC and NBC DO NOT ALLOW IT!

I understand...no need to get all upset. The guy a few posts back told me that it was my "local affiliates" that would not allow it. I wanted an explanation because I don't have any local affiliates. If it's a decision that has been made at corporate...I understand. Thanks.

Sorry about that codeman. I let the tone of my reply to you get away from me. This is an incredibly frustrating issue for so many people, and there's not a thing that we can do about it. The networks don't want it primarily because their local affiliates don't want it because the local affiliates lose out on local advertising revenue. So, even though you don't have any local affiliates, you're still geting screwed by other people's local affiliates. And so are the rest of us.

Sorry for not responsing sooner, I lost track of this thread :(

but I have no way of picking up NBC, Fox, or WB over an antenna (OTA).
Sorry Codeman00, I didn't realize this was your situation.
So what you need is distant networks in HD?

The networks don't want it primarily because their local affiliates don't want it because the local affiliates lose out on local advertising revenue. So, even though you don't have any local affiliates, you're still geting screwed by other people's local affiliates. And so are the rest of us.

So Mark, you are saying that Dish is trying to provide distant nets in HD and the Networks are preventing it?

That's exactly what I'm saying. Networks don't want it, and the current retransmission laws negatively affect some people as well, even if the networks did want it.

What's the excuse for not having WB and UPN in HD?

Why have a full-time UPN HD channel for one show (Star Trek Enterprise)? Please pardon my assumptions, if they're incorrect.

Also note that CBS can only allow you to view their HD feed if (1) you are within the DMA of a CBS O&O local station, or (2) you cannot receive a grade B CBS OTA signal, or (3) you get a waiver from your local CBS affiliate (not likely), or (4) you get an RV exemption from DISH. The CBS affiliates will not allow it otherwise!
