Well I finally got the CBS HD feed from 61.5 and so far I am extremely unimpressed! Granted, I have only seen one evening of CBS (and not all evening) but I tuned in to David Letterman and the next show as well and low and behold, what I see is 4:3 image with white bars on the side of the screen. Is this CBS's excuse for high definition????? Not only is the image not even stretched or partially zoomed to 16:9 but it is nowhere near high definition in quality with analog, over the air, plain old NTSC being significantly better.
I hope that they can do better than that. Doesn't the CBS executives have enough money to buy a HD set and then see what is missing????
Sigh, I can see what Charlie is saying...there is no high def worth carrying ....

Not all shows on any network are in HD yet. Letterman isn't. Survivor isn't. 48 Hours and 60 Minutes are not. The CBS Evening News isn't. CSI Miami and CSI are. JAG is. Most other prime time shows are.
This link is for my local Michigan DTV stations, but it lists on the left side of the page those network shows which are broadcast in HD.

So Letterman is not in HD, but the program guide Info says (HD). So I guess the fault is with Dish network..
Thank for the information.

I would guess so. I've never seen Letterman in HD. I have Dish for SD channels, but VOOM for my HD needs, and get my Local CBS in HD. The one time I was down at that hour, Letterman was SD. He's not in the VOOM guide HD.

What fault? That the guide says HD when it's not? That's tribune media's fault - they are the ones that provide Dish the guide data for the receivers.
The signal is 1080i HDTV, but the content is not always sourced in HD.
Funny(wierd) that the ESPN HD listings do not list the "HD" anymore and this occured shortly after a post declared the girls in a "HD" game were short and fat. :)

Try www.titantv.com. Customize it and it should give you a fairly accuarate idea of what's available in HD. Just curious, where on the DISH guide did it show Letterman in HD? I haven't looked but would be curious to see.

Switch over to NBC, and watch Leno in HD. Breathtaking! It doesn't make it any funnier, though.
CBS has the most and the best HDTV content of any of the networks. Virtually all the prime-time episodic TV is in HD, as are many movies, major sporting events and specials. Your harsh assessment is uncompletely unjustified.

All of the networks are comparable as to HD content.
For instance, tonight 8-11pm:
CBS: 1 hour of HD (King of Queens, 2 eps.)
NBC: 1 hour (Law & Order)
ABC: 1 hour (Wife & Kids, Big House)
Fox: None
UPN: 1 hour (Enterprise)
WB: TWO hours (Smallville, Angel)
On avg, it seems that ABC and CBS both have 2-3 hrs of HD per prime time evening, NBC having a little less.
I do notice what appears to be enhanced definition (ED) on my local FOX digital OTA channel for a number of prime time shows. (Not that I watch FOX that often.) Maybe 480P?

It just amazes me when people go into a rage and don't have a clue as to what they're talking about. I'd explain if you had been reasonable and rational, but instead, I'll just tell you to go get an education and then come back with your tail between your legs. Meanwhile, the rest of us are very grateful to CBS for being the network leader in promoting HD. If you knew what you were talking about, you'd be praising CBS instead of condemning them.

Fox is still 480P. They will be moving to 720P this fall I do believe.
CBS has been one of the best networks for rolling out HD.

480P is still better than 480i. Looks like a DVD. (Tastes like chicken.)

You can thank me for that, I wrote the Tribune and asked them if they would only show HD when there was actually something in real HD showing because I would see a BB game listed as HD, turn it on and see all these fat midgets running around on the court. The lady was very nice and said she would look into it and within about a week, the HD designation was no longer listed.
tomb18ca, I guess if you live far enough out in the Boonies to get CBSHD, we can excuse your ignorance about Letterman not being on in HD. Too bad you can't get Leno in HD, it rocks!

Leno, is ugly enough in SD. Why would anyone want to see him in HD. Of course, In HD you could see between Letterman's teeth. I know, some of the guests really look good in HD.

Oh, man, you've just got to see Leno's chin in HD, it's all over the place! All kidding aside, it's more for his guests than him, but he redid his entire stage when they went HD because he really wanted it to have the WOW factor and it does.

And don't forget...CBS has a lot of sports and awards shows in HD. In the last 6 months, the Masters (golf), NCAA bball tourney games, College Football (SEC usually) and other stuff (I think it was the Grammy's) has been in HD. Everyone might think it's a joke..but I appreciate the HD sports programming. Thank you CBS.

almost all sets will have to be redesigned because of the change in aspect ratio.
and the shows will need to be shot differently too.
and make-up is changing.

I believe ABC shows MNF in HD, and I know they showed the Oscars in HD and DD5.1.
I think all the majors are wising up. Now, if only someone would slap some sense into Charlie...

CBS offers most of its primetime programming in HDTV. Last week, 88% of the CBS primetime schedule was in HDTV.
See the CBS HDTV schedule (http://www.cbs.com/info/hdtv/index.php).
Letterman isn't expected to be available in HD until late this year, last I heard.

It's not a DISH problem ... I get CBS-HD on DISH and also CBS-HD OTA. The programs are identical in quality.
CBS does well with it's HD when compaired to the other networks IMO.
CBS is easily the best for HD. They had it generally available first, have the most, and the quality is better (usually) than ABC. I have not seen NBC HD as it is not available here yet. (Fox does not yet do HD) ABC sitcoms seem very little better in HD OTA than digital OTA. CSI is better to the extreme - it is the WOW difference we thought we would get with HD. Most sports on either ABC or CBS seem very good overall. But even on CBS, not everything in HD is WOW. King of Queens for instance seems only marginally better in HD than Digital OTA. Faces and clothes especially in closeups are much much better, but scene shots are not always.

If you want to see what's in HD on CBS, go straight to the source. (http://www.cbs.com/info/hdtv/index.php)
Not bad, only 6 out of 33 Primetime hours are SD. :D
Switch over to NBC, and watch Leno in HD. Breathtaking!OT: Not last night! Courtney Love in HD made me want to lose my dinner!

I find that the CBS-HD has better color & sound quality than my OTA CBS. HOWEVER, CBS-HD east uses those stupid gray sidebars instead of black for its non-HD content. Very annoying. I sometimes need to stretch mode it to get rid of them!!
