It gets kind of hard to categorize these things. Just a whole pile of broken-ness.

I had two timers fire at 9:00pm this evening. One OTA, one satellite.

I selected and did start over on the OTA one to check that it was really going OK. It was, so I paused and powered off.

When I powered on 10 minutes later, I got no video output (SD and HD lights were off).

I pressed the output button once (SD light came on), then twice, HD light came on. HD was outputing a black screen.

I went to the DVR screen, picked the OTA show and "Start Over". I got audio and a black screen, with very thin stripes of program on the very left and right edges of the screen.

I paused which stopped the audio and the motion on the edges and added a little green vertical stripe in the bottom right corner.

Just another night of fun with ole nine twenty one.

I'll keep adding paragraphs of what happens next until I get it working again...

I tried a few other older recorded programs and I get the same thing. Black screen with very thin strips of video (like everything within 4% overscan is blacked out and just the edges are visible).

I tried a satellite SD channel. It told me both PIPs were in use (huh? I never use PIP) and asked which I would like to use. I picked the OTA show.

It appeared for a second (dim with bright edges), but then the middle of the screen faded to black (much at the rate that the gray bars fade in), leaving just the little strips on the edges again. Each press of the format button makes it appear (dimly then fading out again).

I tried switching the display mode to 480p hoping that would reset something video-wise, but same thing, just the strips of visible video on the edges are little wider (I have my SD overscan a bit lower than my HD overscan).

I started a recorded show (black in the middle again), then powered off and powered back on. No video output again. I pressed "output". SD shows banner 77-0 unknown record. Pressed it again, HD shows 77-0 unknown record. I go to DVR screen, select the satellite HD program that is recording and choose View. That gets it back. Start over on the OTA recording actually works this time.

Ok, I'm out of that one. Now I can call my wife back to the room.

This evening, I had a similar thing with the current software version of the 921. I was trying to add back an OTA channel by re-scanning and manually trying to add the channel when all of a sudden, I didn't get a picture at all and couldn't get one on any station. I tried switching between SD and HD and nothing with either mode? I finally just unplugged the unit for about 30 seconds and then plugged it back in. This was the only way to get the 921 to work. This latest software update seems like the worst one yet with regard to stability and OTA channels.

One common thing it seems from scanning all these OTA threads.

To avoid trouble, make damn sure the show you're watching is live from satellite before you shut things down.

Makes me happy that I don't have OTA (except for not having HD for ABC, NBC, and FOX - cmon Dish - get those agreements!).
