Last week, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Quebec arrested a group of individuals who allegedly were selling equipment used to illegally receive satellite TV signals.

The RCMP said it arrested one female and eight male subjects aged between 25 and 45. The operation, known as "Project Console," was conducted in Montreal and Quebec City in cooperation with Industry Canada and the staff of Bell Express Vu, among others, officials said.

In total, the operation led to the execution of eight search warrants in five residences and three places of business specializing in electronics, police officials said. Officers seized software, Bell Express Vu access cards, computers and other types of equipment used to steal satellite TV signals.

Estimates from industry groups suggest as many as 750,000 Canadian households may be receiving satellite TV illegally. The estimated cost to the Canadian broadcasting system is about $400 million a year, state industry estimates.

The Canadian government also is working on provisions to amend the country's Radiocommunication Act to address the piracy of satellite signals.

They make money off of advertisements plus on the additional revenues they get from subscribers as a bonus.
