We're in the Pegasus service area (76092 zip code). I've been a D* subscriber for 7 years. I have 3 receivers, with one being a Zenith HD STB I bought 18 months ago out of my own pocket when they were first released. I'm getting ready to add a Fujitsu plasma. None of our current receives are DVR-capable.

I don't want to buy a $300 HD STB for the plasma right now because I'd rather invest that money in a DVR HD box. I heard about the $99 HD receiver promotion D* is offerring and that seemed like a reasonable deal. I don't mind spending $100 now since it will probably be several months before the Tivo HD boxes are readily available. But Pegasus will not honor that promotion.

I keep wondering why I shouldn't switch to E* right now. I can get 2 HD receivers (non-DVR) and one other dual-turner receiver for free for just a 1-year commitment. Seems like it would be easier with E* to upgrade to a HD-DVR box once they get the bugs worked out. Finally for the packages we want, E* would run about $20/mo less than D*.

What am I missing? I need to act quickly (plasma is being installed Monday) so if I'm switching I need to get humping. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

You're not missing anything assuming that you are aware that the dual-tuner receiver can be a DVR, the DishPlayer DVR522 to be exact. And after 6 months you should be able to return one of the 811s or the 522 and buy a dual-tuner HD DVR if you want to.

For now, I'm just going to feed the new plasma from the HD receiver I bought 18 moinths ago. My HT advisor feels D* delivers a better picture than E*. Plus I'm very disturbed by all the problems E* is having with their HD DVR receiver. Reports sound pretty good on the new HD TIVO. While it's expensive, I'm prettty sure they'll be readily available by the end of May.

Kyle unless you want to give up satellite stay away from DISH. Their problems are not exagerated. You might look into Voom from your zip code you should have no problem seeing the satellite at 61.5. They are getting better reports on their receivers though they still have some bug reports.

I've got E*, 2 DVRs and an HD receiver. No problems with E* whatsoever. I'm very satisfied with the service and the performance of my receivers. I'm going to add Voom in a few days.

Currently, neither E* nor D* have a full lineup of HD programming. If it's lots of pretty pictures you want on your new plasma display, change to E* for the $20/m savings, and add V*'s $40 basic HD package. Your net increase w/b only $20/m, and you get a bonus by getting out from under the heavy thumb of Pegasus. The way I see it, this is a no-brainer for you, and that, as Martha would say, is a good thing.

Congratulations on your new Fujitsu. :righton:

I agree. If you want an HD DVR stay far away from E*. My most recent polls from owners of both E* and D* receivers say the same thing. The HD DirecTivo is for you. It just may be the very best satellite receiver ever made. :)
