2 recordings were taking place, one OTA, one SAT. The 921 was turned off.

at 8:50, it rebooted. I now have Alias in two parts 50 minutes and 7 minutes. I also have Barbershop in 67 and 53 minute segments.

Actually, i got the times wrong, the reboot was actually at 8:07. That means there may have been user interaction involved, so it may be reproduceable. Here is the scenario.

921 turned off.
7:00 Timer 1 starts recording SAT
8:00 Timer 2 starts recording OTA
8:07 I turned on the 921 to verify the recording was taking place. I pressed DVR, saw both recordings active, then pressed cancel (which returned to the OTA show). Then I turned it back off. I'm guessing it crashed/rebooted when I turned it off.

Steve - just to verify - Timer #1 was still recording when Timer #2 fired, right? Also, when you turned the 921 on, what channel was it displaying when you entered the DVR screen - the Timer 1 recording, or the Timer 2 recording?

Yes, Timer #1 was still recording when #2 fired.

When I turned it on, #2 was displayed live, before I went to the DVR screen.

I'll see if I can make mine reboot in this situation tonight.

Had another split recording. Recording SD from BBC-A, split the 1:20 program into 57 minutes and 23 minutes. Add in the buffers, subtract your random reboot and there you are.

No idea why. The unit was on but not being used and I believe the other timers had completed.

Yah, this is why I now do a front panel button soft boot EVERY morning. I haven't seen a single split recording or spontaneous reboot while watching TV since I started doing this. It's the ultimate (simple) workaround I've found for the spontaneous reboot issue.

Hmm, maybe plug the power into a timer to power cycle it every morning at 5:00 am or something. Maybe they should ship it with one.

Actually, ReplayTV, implemented an automatic weekly reboot to solve some memory leak issues they never could track down, so there is precedent ;)

Steve, I tried three times to get this to happen with mine tonight, and I never could. Will continue trying when I get more time.

It may have just been one of those "random" reboots that happened to coincided with the two recordings going on and some sequence of interaction. I wouldn't spend too much time on this one, as I can't be 100% sure of exactly what I did (and clearly you haven't succeeded with what I described).

Here is my scenario:

1st event set to record at 6:00 pm PST - 9483 "The Guardian"
2nd event set to record at 7:00 pm PST - 9483 "Judging Amy"

At about 7:45 pm PST, I went into the DVR screen to make sure "The Guardian" recorded properly. I didn't, as I found 2 entries in the list. The first entry had 14 minutes and the second had 0 minutes. Curious to see if the 14 minute recording looked ok, I started it and zoomed through a few minutes, but as it started I noticed the "REC" in the upper right in the banner, but didn't think anything of it. Then, when I hit "STOP" to get out to the menu, I noticed the recording of "Amy" stopped also, hence losing a minute or so while I scrambled to turn the recording back on.

My wife later told me that the unit had rebooted in the middle of a show my son was watching on one SAT tuner, while it was recording "The Guardian" on the other.

So not only do I lose most of "The Guardian" because of a reboot, but it mistakenly stopped my "Amy" recording, as it seemed to think the DVR event for "The Guardian" was still recording (cause we all know we can't hit stop while replaying the beginning of a current recording.)

I think I might have to start doing the daily, manual, morning reboot also....but hey, as long as this thing isn't perfect, I will keep calling Dish and get my $5 credit for the DVR fee...

Mine rebooted Tuesday night while recording 24 from OTA. I beleive it was either 43 or 46 minutes into the recording. There was only 1 timer, the unit was off, both tuners were SD satellite prior to the timer. The timer did finish the recording.

I just had another split recording, where turning it on while a recording in progress was likely the cause.

I've removed all OTA channels. Last channel viewed was Discovery HD. I then turned off. HDNet started recording at 8:00. At 8:24, I turned it on to check things out and didn't get a picture. I switched to my HD Tivo (Yes, the 921's days are truly numbered) and later back to the 921. At that point the 921 was OFF, displaying a black screen. I turned it on and got Discovery HD. I pressed DVR and saw the Cindy Lauper recording split in two, one 24 minutes long, one still recording.

I really think this is going back. The only reason I would keep it at this point is if Dish's video quality (less compression, perhaps) shows to be much better and if a software update in the next week or so fixes a majority of my problems. So far, two days and no issues with the HD Tivo for me yet.
