Can you hook up a Dish 811 box to a 15 pin vga cable?
I have a projector that uses a vga/breakout cable then 5bnc to the projector.
I know the 6000 receiver had it. Thanks

It requires a DVI-D cable or component cables.

A component cable to the RGB connectors on the breakout should work. Some people have mentioned a DVI-VGA connector. But, I was under the impresssion that the 811's DVI is digital. As you probably know, VGA/RGB is analog. As such, I have my doubts about using the DVI output to VGA input on your projector.

newegg.com sells dvi to vga converters. You can also find them at cablestogo.com

If the DVI output of the 811 is digital (DVI-D), an adapter won't work, unless it changes digital signals to analog.
I was under the impression the 811 DVI output was DVI-D. Is that incorrect?

You are so right -- DVI-D it is. And I retract my former post
As an afterthought: Why not use an S-Video to RGB converter? The downside, of course, is that the 811 downconverts HDTV to SD on the S-Video and composite outputs. If the projector is capable of 1080i and/or 720p, one would think that the breakout box would have component video inputs. If not, I'd check with the manufacturer to see if an adapter is available.

Why not just use component to the RGB on the VGA/RGB breakout? That would be the best scenerio, I believe.

I agree wholeheartedly. However, in the initial post, no mention was made of component video being available on the breakout box. I think that's what got us all going in the first place. If indeed the breakout has component inputs, I'd look no further.

He says so right in his post that he has "a vga/breakout cable then 5bnc to the projector." That is why I suggested he used a component to the RGB connectors on the breakout. (The other two bnc's are for H and V sync, which isn't needed in this case.)

Gary: I didn't connect the "5 BNC's" to being component video. Not having a projector at all, and looking at the original post, I assumed that component video inputs weren't available on the breakout box.
Question to you: You say you have both a 510 and and 811 in your primary viewing room. I'm thinking of taking Dish up on their 510 offer to go along with my 811 in my primary viewing area, but have a question: does this mean that I'd have to have a quad lnb installed on my dish500 and additional coax run to the 510, or is there a switch available that I could use? Or is there a polarization issue that precludes using a switch? I'm a definite newbie when it comes to satellite installation requirements.

As far as I know, you'll need a quad LNB (or DP34 in a two dish setup) to add a dedicated feed to the 510. Each receiver needs its own independant feed from the lnb/switch.

I surmised as much. My retailer gave me a quote of $135 or thereabouts for a quad lnb. I didn't ask him for a total quote.
I could replace my 311 with a 510 and then run coax from it to my primary set, but PQ would suffer.
I'm just looking for a way to be able to record one show while viewing another without upgrading from 811 to 921 (and paying big bucks, in addition to waiting in line for one!)
