View Full Version : Self install and warranty problem

I contacted one of the DirectTV distributors and asked about doing a self install due to the fact that all the cabling and mount post are in place and the only thing I have to do is connect the equipment and aim it. They said "no problem" except that this would void the warranty on the equipment. Is this a fact??? If it is, is this a great concern? Has there been a high number of Hughes equipment failures? Thanks for any info on these questions.

I find that hard to believe as a blanket statement. The manufacturer may want to protect themself if the equipment is damaged due to improper installation (like a lightning strike that destroys a unit that was not grounded properly) but I can't see how a self-install would void the warranty entirely. This is probably (my guess) a way for the distributor to get you to let him install it for you and charge you more money. I would check with the equipment manufacturer rather than the distributor. Perhaps the warranty he's describing is HIS warranty.
I bought all equipment at national electronic stores and did self-install and I saw nothing in any paperwork that said that there was no warranty if I self-installed. Maybe you should just bypass the distributor altogether.

I haven't received a reply from the manufacturer yet.

i installed my Directv stuff myself .The dealer i bought it from told me to contact him in case of problems .Funny thing is he also told me not to ground any of the equipment and i have never figured out why unless he was planning on using that as an out should anything happen.I did however ground it upon installing it .
