View Full Version : FEATURE REQUEST: Resolution
Is there a way (without any special equipment) to find out what resolution a particular program is being broadcast? If not, this would be a great feature to add to the 921. I would like to easily find out the resolution that a station is broadcasting at any one time. I know some people on this forum can tell if something is displaying at 720i or 1080i or 480p, etc.

No, not that I'm aware of.
I guess a question is, why do you want to know? If it's to manually adjust the 921 output resolution to match the source, then the best solution would be to have a configuration screen selecting the output resolution for each source resolution (there really aren't that many).
Currently, it's pretty easy to keep them straight....
Standard Def is 480i
Fox is currently mostly 480p widescreen (whatever that is)
ABCHD and ESPNHD are 720p
All other HD is 1080i
Fox is changing over to 720p.

Of course then you have fun things like WFAA in Dallas which is an ABC affiliate but converts the network 720p to 1080i for broadcast.
Our Fox is transmitting 720p now, but programming will still be 480p until next fall. I found it it switched to 720p when my TV would no longer sync on it (I had the HD tuner, not a 921) set to output native.

Wow, a station scaling the 720p to 1080i is nuts. This would force my 720p projector to go through two scalers...
Well, then, as per the original poster, the question is certainly valid. There's no way to really know what anything is be transmitted at.

My hipix cards tell me, along with the data rate the signal is being broadcast at, but without them I'd have no way of knowing either. I do like being able to see when my stations try to get away with sending 16 Mbps rather than 19.2 Mbps - whenever I see that, they get a call... :)

What is an hipix card and how do I get one?
Thanks

ATSC tuner card for your computer that records OTA HD to disk. They aren't made anymore, but there are other card options. Check out www.avsforum.com

Gawd I wish there was a Dish HD receiver that had an ATSC modulator. ;)

Used to be...that's what the 5000 was.

Really! So, I could hook a 5000 to the satellite and feed the output into a MyPix to make my own HD PVR PC???

That's what a number of people were doing with the HD modulator that was an upgrade to the 5000. But, that's dead now as all of the HD channels are 8PSK, and the HD mod only worked with QPSK channels.
(I'm secretly hoping that I'll be able to do this with the 922 if and when I get one.)

Bummer. Thanks anyway Mark.
