I mentioned in the DVD forum about creating anamorphic DVD's from wide screen HDTV broadcasts. The process was a little complicated when I did it with the Dish 6000 receiver.

With the HD Tivo, it's very easy. I haven't tried it yet but this is how it should work:

1. Set the HD Tivo to 4:3

2. Hit the ratio button on the remote to set the HD Tivo to "Full". The video should be anamorphically squeezed.

3. Capture the video by hooking up the A/V outputs to your capture device.

4. Use your favorite DVD authoring software to create the DVD making sure anamorphic is selected.

That's it! Those with stand-alone DVD recorders might be out of luck but if you are using computer based DVD authoring, it should work fine. The only caveat is that you will lose the 5.1 audio.

The stand alone Sony RDR-GX7 will work

This unit will record 16:9 content via the S-Video inputs, I have been backing up Deadwood for a friend (cheapskate) who doesn't have cable or directv.

Set the HDTiVo to 480i (the only output the Sony will except )
On the Sony select 16:9 under recording options
Record

Done...and then if I want to clean stuff up, I edit on the PC.

This works with my Philips DVDR75. I just set the Tivo to 16:9 and full and record. All I have to do is play it back on my rp82 or Denon 2200 and it recognizes it as anamorphic. It worked the same way with my Samsung 360.

Very cool! Thanks for the the update guys. After I started this thread, I did make an anamorphic DVD using the method I explained. It worked great!
