I am new to satellite and have been a dish customer since the begining of March. We currently have a 322 receiver and was looking at upgrading it to a 522. We have never experienced a DVR and I had a question about the 522 maybe you all could answer. The 322 it will be replacing currently is set up to control my son's tv and the tv in our bedroom.
My question is what is the recording capabilities of the 522 such as watching the TV while recording and recording while not watching TV.
Thanks for all replys and help.
Barry
You and your son could record something at the same time. But certain functioins like dish home and stuff like that do require for the other TV to be inactive. It can record 100 hours. there is a record plus feature that allows a person to record something on TV2 and watch whatever on TV1 and then watch what they recorded on TV2 on TV1.

Thanks for the reply Matt.
More questions for you or whom ever feels free to answer them. You say my son and I can both record something at the same time. My question concerning this is can either one of us watch either TV while both recording at the same time? If so what is able to be viewed like other recorded programs or live TV?
If I am recording on one TV and not recording on the other can I watch what I want on the TV that I am not recording on?
Thanks for all replys

Just out of curiosity, is Dish allowing you to do this? I'm assuming you're under the DHA plan, and from what I understand, it's not very flexible in regards to equipment upgrades.

According to the last CSR I spoke to about the upgrade I can upgrade to the 522 for $99. The down part being that paying the $99 I still do not own the receiver. I am paying the $99 just for the upgrade itself, but I am still just leasing the receiver as with the 322.
This is how I understand the way the CSR explained it to me.
Please correct me if I am misunderstanding this and You know that this is not true.
Thanks!

The 522 has two tuners and two outputs. Hence, you cannot record two things at once from satellite and watch a third (different) station at the same time. You can, of course, record something with one tuner while watching something else on the other tuner, or record something while playing play previously recorded content.

Thanks for the reply Slordak.
Ok now I am a little confused.
You say that I can not record 2 programs at once. If you notice in a previous post MattS stated "You and your son could record something at the same time."
So you are saying that this is incorrect?
Q. So what if neither TV is being used for either viewing live tv or a previous recorded program. Then I still can not record 2 programs at the same time?
I understand say TV1 is recording a program that I can not watch another live program at the same time on TV1, but I can watch a previously recorded program. Correct?

Once u go DVR, you'll never go back. Especially if u have kids, or a lot of interruptions. I have a 501 and 510 and I luv 'em. If u plan on using it for a few years, then I'd do the upgrade.

I thought that in Dual mode (only thing currently available), each tuner is basically assigned to a TV.
Yes, you can record two things at once, but the timers must have been set up from the separate TVs (seems like it would have been better to allow a user to get both tuners based on availability). I'm not sure that you can be recording and surfing on the same "TV" (unless you have the TV2 output hooked up).
Single mode is coming, and that will change this. But, it seems like the need for single vs dual mode could have been avoided.
This is a funky box and these types of permutations are confusing. The concept of assigning each TV a tuner is certainly simplier (though annoyingly restrictive).
You say that I can not record 2 programs at once. If you notice in a previous post MattS stated "You and your son could record something at the same time." That's incorrect. You CAN record (2) things at once.
Q. So what if neither TV is being used for either viewing live tv or a previous recorded program. Then I still can not record 2 programs at the same time? See above
I understand say TV1 is recording a program that I can not watch another live program at the same time on TV1, but I can watch a previously recorded program. Correct? I don't think answering "yes" or "no" will sense so....
If TV1 is recording a show, you CANNOT watch a DIFFERENT LIVE program. You CAN watch a pre-recorded event while TV1 is recording though.
In theory, this is possible:
TV1 record a program
TV2 record a program
Using TV1, watch a pre-recorded program
Using TV2, watch a pre-recorded program
