View Full Version : Set top boxes
One thing that irritates me is on my settop box (I have a phillipes dsx5500) multi sat. system, there is no clock display or any display for that matter. Are all the set tops like this or just the cheap ones? or just the multi sat. ones for that matter? Any feedback would be great.

To my knowledge there are no DBS set top boxes with a front LED clock, I've seen a few digital cable boxes that have them but no DBS.

What about the DVR boxes

No DirecTiVos or DishDVRs have a front display, I don't remember what the Ultimate TV looks like off hand, but I don't think it had one either.

I stand corrected :) Thanks for posting that Tarbilly, I had no idea Memorex even made DirecTV receivers, must be from a few years back.

I've never seen a STB with a clock on the front. The RCA and Sony UTV's are clockless.
Alright then im glad im just like not the only one who didnt have the lcd display--I thought maybe my box was cheaper or somethin like that. After having cable your whole life u get used to the led display.
Some Samsung HD receivers show the time when switched off, otherwise they display the current channel.
The Hughes HTL-HD displays the channel number on the front of the receiver. That memorex was actually made by Uniden I believe it was the second or third year of Directvs existence.

I switched to D* from E* in April. I have been very pleased execpt for the loss of WB and UPN and the difficulty of using the Philips DSX 5500 set top box. It takes 12 keystrokes on the remote to get to my favorites list and every time the box is turned off then back on it returns to the all channel list. I do not want to leave the box on all of the time due to the heat at night when the AC is off in that room as well as the fact that I use the auto-tune feature so when the set top box comes on my S-VHS VCR senses the signal and comes on to record.
Are all of the multi-sat set top boxes like this? This one was provided free as part of the one year commitment.
you know what the way u have to use the fav. list on the phillipes dsx5500 annoys me to. so i dont even use it any more.
Now I have a multi-sat system triple lnb, with 3 basic recievers. If i wanted to get a dvr reciever in place of one of the basics do i have to do anything else besides deactivate the basic one and activate the dvr one? and can i do this my self?

All you have to do is run another cable from the one remaining unused output on the LNB to the location of the receiver that is going to be replaced with the TiVo.

So I couldnt just unhook the regular reciever and put a dvr reciever in its place and hook it up with that same wire?

If you want to utilize full functionality of the DVR by using dual tuners you need two cables going into the TiVo, one for each tuner. Using your existing cable for one tuner and a new run for the other. If you don’t want to have both tuners active you can tell the TiVo that during the setup, but in order to watch one show and record another, or record two shows at once you need two cables from the LNB.

Wow thats way different than a digital cable dvr set up. That means that i would have to run well over 100 feet of more cable from my sat. to set-top.

If you don't want to do a second run right away you can always set the DVR for one tuner as I said above, then later on run cable and enable the second tuner. The process is real easy you just have to go into the set up.
