I am considering signing up for a new DirecTV account. I understand that my committment to a Total Choice package must be for one year. AFTER that one year has expired, would I be to just subscribe to the sports pack. Or do I have to keep a Total Choice base package regardless? I am really only interested in my RSNs, locals, and sports packages. I am in the NY DMA.

Total Choice is always the minimum package you have to have. You cannot just subscribe to the sports pak or HBO or whatnot.

thats not always true. NFL sunday ticket is considered a minimum package. you could drop total choice and just have sunday ticket along with locals and the sport pack if you would like.

That is incorrect. NFL Sunday Ticket is no longer available "ala carte". That was changed as of March of this year. So to get ST you'd need to get Total Choice first. You might still be able to find a CSR that isn't aware and will get you ST ala carte, but it's not longer available, officially or unofficially.
