View Full Version : The List…
DirecTV subscribers:
Let's use this a thread for the channels you think, from a business standpoint (meaning consumer demand), you believe DirecTV should add. Please keep in mind this is just a discussion -- I'm not holding my breath for these additions!
I'll start with three:
1. Style Network
2. Great American Country
3. C-Span3

Either a UPN FCC Legal Super Station
or
a Direct TV Branded UPN feed for that 40% of the county that currently does not have an Over the Air UPN option.
We want our Star Trek.
In many smaller cities you can only get UPN on cable. There is not over the air.

Why would we want any of those channels? They seem like a waste of bandwith to me. What's on CSPAN3 that isn't on one of two we already have?

It is regrettable that the so-called premium channels show almost all of their movies in pan-and-scan format.
My list:
International Channel (http://www.internationalchannel.com) (carried on both Sacramento and Bay Area cable systems, only channel that I miss when switching to DBS)
Classic Arts Showcase (http://www.classicartsshowcase.org) (carried as a PI channel on Dish)
Ovation TV (http://www.ovationtv.com/) (carried on local cable)
The Anime Network (http://www.theanimenetwork.com/)
C-SPAN 3 (http://www.c-span.org/watch/index.asp?Cat=TV&Code=CS3&ShowVidDays=30&ShowVidDesc=&ArchiveDays=30) (now on several systems)
C-SPAN Radio (http://www.c-span.org/watch/cspanradio.asp?Cat=TV&Code=CSR&ShowVidDays=30&ShowVidDesc=&ArchiveDays=30) (airing on Sirius and XM)
Yesterday USA audio (http://www.yesterdayusa.com) (audio feed on same transponder as WGN)
Goodlife TV (http://www.goodtv.com) (carried on local cable)
More west coast feeds since not all subscribers have DVRs and California is the most populated stated in the nation.
The local cable company also carried iLifeTV (http://www.ilifetv.com/), but I can't see anything appealing on the schedule.
Time to hit DirecTV's feedback page (https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/Feedback.do;jsessionid=AE4txkf2j2WLGE8vZJlE6nIBVH9 NWsExD72O1E4muFsY52KOtkzl!-1682097056!1086617709355).
1. Style Network - the reason my move from E* to D* later this year may be vetoed.
The International Channel and Ovation!

My mother is pissed that dish has this channel and directv doesnt. we just moved from digital cable to directv and they had it.(i thought it was a very popular channel my self and Im kinda shocked directv dont have it) Shes having "shaby chic" withdrawl. LOL
CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast)
The Tennis Channel!!!!!!!!!!!!
HBO Comedy, Starz Cinema, Goodlife TV, additional MTV/VH1 channels.
My local cable company offers all of these.
Channels I'd like to see on DirecTV.. but we all know will probably not happen:
-Style
-Telemundo (off para todos, especially for the olympics)
-Ovation
-WWOR, WPIX, KTLA, WSBK, KWGN
-C-SPAN3
-International Channel
-MTV/VH1 "Digital" Channels
-TFN: The Football Network (footballnetwork.com) (has CFL)
-Various Regional news networks (RNN, NWCN, NECN, etc)
The following Canadian channels, with blacked out programming if needed for duplicate shows on US stations:
-CBC
-TSN
-Rogers SportsNet
-The Score
-NHL Network (can be part of Center Ice pack)
-MuchMusic (the real Canadian MuchMusic, not MMUSA (which we now have as FUSE)
-CTV NewsNet
-BBC World
-Sky News (which may happen with Murdoch)
-City TV (Toronto)
Also various radio stations as Canadian systems have:
-KROQ (la), WXRK (ny), ESPN Radio, Fox Sports Radio, Sporting News Radio, AP Network News, etc., etc....
A Kids Music Channel or complete move to XM/Sirius for audio channels.....
The satellite companies should stick together.
Maybe some regional stations like NY1 (but owned by cable co). I'm sure they'd be happy to increase viewership.
HBO Comedy

Waste of bandwidth?
No, that would be Comedy Central, ESPN Classics, FOOD Network, FINE living, E!, all the other mindless channels and all the other channels airing 24 hours of reruns.
And then there's Fox's 24/7 neo-conservative propaganda channel, called "Fox News" which is a TRUE "waste of bandwidth".
Wisdom TV is full of programming pertaining to personal growth, alternative medicine, social consciousness, spirituality, relationships and global issues.
Free Speech TV provides a choice for alternative views to be spoken and heard across the country, a much needed alternative to ABC, FOX NEWS, CBS and the other conglomerate owned media outlets.
EuroNews allows us to see what is happening with the REST of the world, the USA is NOT alone on this planet
The International Channel - similar to EuroNews but with more cultural and lifestyle oriented programming.
CSPAN 3 allows for a more in-depth look at our own government, important in this post-9/11 world
Showtime Beyond and 5 Star Max are more movies.
ALL these channels are ALREADY carried on Digital Cable.

Free Speech TeeVee? :barf: From what I saw of it on Dish Network, it might as well be called the Nader Network with some questionable coverage of protests. WorldLink is only slightly better.
Newsworld International does provide Canadian news broadcasts, and BBC America rebroadcasts the BBC Newscasts. Newsworld International, however, was acquired by a group lead by Al Gore.
I won't subscribe to premium channels that show movies in Pan and Scan format almost all of the time.
But, you know which channel is a waste of bandwidth? TV Guide channel.

I use my television for entertainment purposes only....not in depth looks at our govt, not for info on what's going on in other countries, (I could care less what the Europeans are doing) not for alternative views on things, and not really for news, (even though fox news seems to be the only fair news channel, unlike those liberal controlled others: CNN, MSNBC, etc....)
So in that regard, I love my espn, i love my tv land, i love my MTV, i love my Food Network, Nick at nite, TBS, and movie channels. After a hard days work, i want to come home and watch nothing but mindless tv.....in fact if it involves any kinda of deep thought, it quickly gets turned off.
In my opinion a waste of bandwidth, is anything that doesn't entertain.
Get rid of Home shopping, QVC, and all the others that Directv Covers.
Get rid of NASA, get rid of CNN, MSNBC, Oxygen, Court TV, Fit TV, and RFD.

I mostly agree with you, however I do like MSNBC, NASA, and CNN though. TV is entertainment. The channels that Guesst925XTU pretty much all have feeds available on the interent (w/ the exception of the movie channels).
To me it makes absoultely no sense to waste a channel on them when they appeal to a very small audience, and are already freely available via the web.

El Paso has lost both it's WB and UPN stations to Spanish affiliates. Time Warner Cable carries KTLA part time as a WB station but has to replace syndicated shows also available locally with infomercials. TW also carries the UPN prime time feed directly on an otherwise community events channel. The reception on both of these cable channels is flawed as they are channels also used for over the air analog transmittion so the signals conflict and one can actually see movement from the local channel in the background.
To effectivly compete with cable I feel the best solution for D* would be to have dedicated WB and UPN channels with no syndicated shows to worry about, much as is the case with PAX. They could then make those channels available to cities with no local affilate.

I second both of those.
Anybody know why the International Channel isn't available on either DirecTV or Dish Network? Seems only cable systems have the channel. I wondered if there was a connection.

There is a form on International Channels website where you can click on a link and they would send a form letter to Dish and DirecTV.
(That's the only channel I miss from being a cable subscriber.)

- GoodLife TV which has a lot of great shows...
http://www.goodtv.com/programs.php
- Other educational channels.
I'de like for them to have "BET on Jazz". My local cable company has it, but you have to subscribe to the digital service to get it.
A good alternative would be the Canadian produced "Cool TV".
