Hello, thanks to everyone for all of the great info out here!! I have a combo question for a new install.

I have one cable line coming into the house directly into a amplifier. It is then split 4 times and somewhere else in the house it is split again.

Will the satellite signal make it through the splitter?
If I understand the diplexer right, you have to have one where both lines (cable / Dish) come in, and one on the receiver??

Any other words of advice? I prefer to keep both the cable and

You can keep both satellite and cable. The installer will need to run 2 lines for the satellite and 1 for the cable tv into the house where you say it splits. He can install a multi switch (this will combine both signals for you) at that point then run a wire(no splitters) to each tv.He then will need to use a diplexer at each tv to seperate the cable and satellite signals.Expect to pay a little extra for the diplexers as the installer has to pay for them Directv does not supply them.

Is there any way to determine if a drop is connected directly to the amplifier? i.e. is it possible to locate a splitter or tell what drops are connected to it. The reason I ask is becuase the house is 2 story w/ a basement. I can't tear up the walls searching for splitter and remain married at the same time!!

Splitters fail just like any other component, a correctly designed distribution system should have all splitters accessible. It maybe located behind a wall plate it might be in a closet. It is your home look in all the logical places, hopefully you will be able to find any that are not located where your amplifier is located.
