Kentucky consumers with satellite TV will escape a tax on their services ... at least for now.
On Monday, Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher unveiled a "Public Services Continuation Plan" that will maintain the operation of state government in the absence of a legislative-enacted budget. The executive order extends funding for state government agencies and departments from July 1 to Sept. 30.
The Kentucky Legislature failed to pass a budget during this year's session. At issue for state Democratic lawmakers was a tax proposal from the Republican governor that aimed to tax communications services - including satellite TV - at 7.62 percent.
Without enactment of the budget, there will be no tax on communications/satellite TV services in the state.
Fletcher also said he wouldn't call a special session of the Legislature unless the two sides of the debate can agree on a state budget. The governor has called his tax proposal a "tax modernization" plan that aims to generate jobs in Kentucky.
