View Full Version : hooking dvd player up to 311 receiver

is it possible to hook up your dvd player to 311 receiver. the reason i ask is because my tv doesn't have s-video and and the receiver does. i tried to hook it up but i don't what button to push to get it to work. thanks for any help.

With some exceptions (e.g. the 921 composite input), Dish Network receivers generally do not have inputs for external devices. Since the use case of the receiver is to tune satellite channels and provide these as output, there's really no reason why receivers should have inputs. This is the same reason why a DVD player doesn't usually have any inputs; it's an output device, not a switch or tuner.

The S-Video connection on a Dish Network receiver is an output and cannot be used as an input. You can't just hook it up to a DVD player, since this would be hooking the output of both devices together. You could, of course, hook it to the input on a DVD recorder, but that's a separate inquiry.

Yep, Slordak's right. The 921 and 811 do have composite only inputs, and they up-convert that signal to match the output resolution that you have your receiver set to. I haven't tried this yet because I have a 1080i DVD player already, but regardless I hear that the 811 does an inferior task of up-converting the composite inputs anyhow.
