The Consumer Electronics Association praised legislation aimed at satellite TV and the digital TV transition introduced this week by Sens. John Ensign (R-Nev.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.).

The bill, the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Rural Consumer Access to Digital Television Act, will allow DBS providers deliver a network high-def feed to consumers who are unable to receive a local broadcast digital signal. CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro said the legislation - if enacted - will give American consumers a greater incentive to purchase HDTV sets and push broadcasters to get more full-power HDTV on the air.

"This bill is a common-sense remedy for viewers who are not being offered HDTV over the air," Shapiro said. "Americans should not be deprived of the extraordinary HDTV experience simply because their local broadcaster is not yet offering the service, or offering it only to a reduced service area."

Meanwhile, it's expected that a hearing on the Ensign/McCain bill will go before the Senate Commerce Committee next Tuesday. McCain is chairman of that committee. The bill was introduced earlier this week. (For story, see: http://www.skyreport.com/viewskyreport.cfm?ReleaseID=1437)

Maybe if we are lucky with the CEA joining with satellite maybe they can beat the powerfull NAB for a change and get these common sense changes passed in the new SHVA.
