I have a Hughes with Tivo. Just wondering if it is necessary, advisable, not advisable to leave the receiver on and just turn the TV on and off........or does it even matter? Thanks

DirecTV is constantly sending down the guide data on all of the transponders, so it isn't even necessary to put the DirecTiVo in standby mode. (Although it would be nice to say "It's in standby, go fill it up with wishlist programming.")

The single-tuner DVRs from Dish Network need to be put on standby so that the nine-day guide can be downloaded to the hard drive.

I turn my DirecTiVos off when not it use, just by habit, doesn't really make a difference though.

Well, there is no way to turn it off other then unplug it. They are designed to be on 24x7, thus no power button. ;)

And as explained about 1000 times, standby does nothing but shut off the video and audio outputs and activate the RF throughput. The hard drive still spins, still writes data (it's always receiving guide data and re-doing the ToDo list) and so on. On some models the buffers stop recording in standby but like I said, the hard drive is still spinning and writing data and of course it will record your programs and so on.

I agree with the statement for the most part, but there has to be a difference between continuously buffering two sat feeds compared to being in standby and only writing guide data. I'm not saying one way is better than the other, but there is a difference in activity level.

The HD-TiVo only buffers the OTA channels while in standby. It doesn't buffer the DirecTv channels in standby. I usually don't leave it on an OTA channel because of that.

Right now, even though I leave my TiVo on all the time, it is recording Russian House on the Sundance Channel and Road Ends on Showtime as suggestions.. That just blows one of my theories out the door.

All D* receivers on all the the time. This is not E*, where receivers lock up once a mo if left on. Rebooted in Jan I think, the power went out.

I've had both Tivo and DirecTv since they day they became available. (10 years?)
I've never turned any of them off and I've never had ANY problems with anything.
