I recently defected to Dish from DirecTivo. My Sony Tivo stayed on all the time as was recommended. I can't find anything in the 522 owners manual about shutting it down, overnight, for example.

Also will programs set to record turn the machine on? Will it update to the new version overnight if it's left on?

In between the DirecTivo and Dish I tried a local cable company and a DVR with the Motorola nameplate. Tech support for that machine did'nt know that it did, in fact, turn itself on to record a scheduled program.

They turn on to record. Off is really just a standby mode. There is some pwer difference with it in standby but not much.

Also, if you don't shut it down you will not get any software upgrades installed I believe.

Coincidentally, I got my update overnight tonight. The box was on when I retired and was off when I got up. When powered up it was on the Dish Alert channel (not on my favorites list) and as I posted elsewhere my HBO's were not in the channel list. After a call to tech support, I powered down and they were restored when it powered up again.

Mine was on and recorded a program at 1:05 AM, was off in the morning and had received the upgrade to 2.01

The only way to turn the 522 completely *off* is to pull the power plug.
