View Full Version : DMAs with 1 station
How many of the small DMAs just have 1 station? One northeast of us in Lafayette, IN just has one CBS affiliate WLFI 18 which serves 3 counties in Indiana. They get the rest of their networks from Indianapolis including WISH-TV 8 CBS. Both WISH and WLFI are owned by LIN Broadcasting.
It sounds like it would have made more sense to have WLFI has a satellite station off of WISH.
Mankato, Mn has one station (KEYC 12 CBS). There is a Grade B ABC in the market (KAAL Austin, MN). cable has both + all the Mpls stations. Dish subscr4ibers acan get distants for NBC & FOX
SHVIA only allows Dish or Direct offer you one DMA...when they get to these DMA's with one station, right now you have to be outside of Grade B to get distants. The SHVERA is trying to level the playing field between cable & dish and allow "significantly viewed"

Isn't Mankato in another DMA? I thought they were.

I think that what he is saying is that Mankato has only one station but that the ABC station in another DMA is at least Grade B. Therefore it could not currently be sold in the DMA but it can stop you from getting distant nets.
The reservation is outside DC. While I am in the Washington DMA I am at least Grade B for the Baltimore locals as well. I would need waivers from them too in order to get distant nets. Consequently I never even tried.
Parkersburg WV, one station, WTAP - 15 NBC (not counting a PBS repeater).
Three counties in the market, the two in WV get all (including the NBC) of the stations from Huntington-Charleston, the one in Ohio gets all (including the NBC) from Columbus, on cable, that is.
In the Salisbury DMA where I live, we have 2 (CBS and ABC) that are available ota in analog. Might as well only be 1 for me as I get some sort of wierd interference with WMDT (ABC) and I hardly ever watch it because of the snow/ghosting. WBOC (CBS) comes through crystal clear.
On Comcast they get NBC from DC and Baltimore as well as Fox from DC and CBS from Baltimore. The local UPN is available digitally OTA or on Cable and the local WB is available on cable only.
Im really hoping for the significantly viewed part of the proposed SHVERA to make it, as I would rather have Fox and NBC (currently getting out of NY) from somewhere closer to home.

Others that come to mind (full power stations, not considering non-local PBS):
Glendive, MT (#210): KXGN/5
Zanesville, OH (#202): WHIZ/18
Alpena, MI (#208): WBKB/11**
Presque Isle, ME (205): WAGM/8**
North Platte, NE (209): KNOP/2**
Lima, OH (194): WLIO/35*
Jonesboro, AR (181): KAIT/8**
* Market has LP/CA stations locally programmed
** Market has Regional/State PBS station (not a local station)

I think its a shame that some in the Charleston DMA are a bit closer to Parkersburg than Charleston yet cannot get the Parkersburg market if it would become available and those in the Parkersburg DMA could not get the Charleston locals. I hope sometime in the future that satellite will be allowed to carry the neighboring DMA as well.

I wonder if Dish Network has the logic of adding all the small markets to get a larger amount of subscribers than some of the bigger markets? I ask this because if you have, for example, 10 markets with 4-8 network channels but some smaller markets that have half to a fraction of that many channels, then couldn't they actually add many more markets and actually get more subscribers with the same space those channels would take up as some of the larger markets? In other words 10 big markets could take up the same amount of space as 20+smaller markets that could get Dish/DirecTv more subscribers.
Isn't Mankato in another DMA? I thought they were.
Yep. Mankato is its own DMA with KEYC (CBS) in it. KAAL (ABC) which is in the Mason City, IA/Rochester, MN/Austin, MN is considered Grade B in most of the Mankato DMA.
Cable subscribers in Mankato get KEYC, KAAL, the PBS from the Austin market (KSMQ) and the Mpls stations (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, UPN). The only Mpls stations they don't get are KSTC (Independent), KTCI (2nd PBS in Mpls) and KMWB (WB)..they have the cable only WB.
I think that what he is saying is that Mankato has only one station but that the ABC station in another DMA is at least Grade B. Therefore it could not currently be sold in the DMA but it can stop you from getting distant nets.
Correct. KAAL isn't on Dish yet, but yet it blocks people from getting ABC on distants.
It's tough down there OTA because KEYC's tower is about 25 miles West of Mankato, yet KAAL is straight East of there.

I am really keeping my fingers crossed for "significantly viewed" also. My DMA offers little that we actually watch. Cable has a huge advantage in this area as it is allowed to carry two other DMA's.
