View Full Version : 1080i DVD without DVI
My TV does not have DVI. Is there any DVD Player that would pump 1080i to my TV without the DVI connection just like my Dish 6000 receiver? I checked the Samsung (I think its the 318) over at Bestbuy and it says it requires the DVI connection. :(

I have a Zenith DVB-318 and it will output upconverted 1080i over component cables as well as DVI. I am very happy with this player as most are. There is a 193 page tread over on AVSforum with a FAQ if you are interested.

I think it's the only player that will do such and it's actually recommended to use the components rather than the DVI. I use the component on my 318 and it looks awesome on our Toshiba 65". Almost a no-brainer at $160.
There are actully 3 players on the market that output 1080i over component, and none of them are sold in retail stores. The DVB-318 is the best overall player of all 3. it is also the cheapest and most compact. I got one coming next week, can't wait to try it out.
$160 where? I couldn't find it under $199 and of course Best Buy had it for $240 :-(

I got mine for $160 (shipped) at http://www.gochnauers.com/ (http://www.gochnauers.com/) and I know several others who purchased theirs from here. No problems reported with ordering from them thus far. It's a mom and pop operation.
Just a note to anyone who like to purchase it at Gochnauers. They ship in the retail box, and are not double boxed. this cuts down on shipping costs. It also means it has a much higher risk of being damaged. "G" doesn't accept returns for the most part. If you would like double boxing, it is available (I requested it for my player, thats how I know). It will cost you though. $10 extra.

I didn't think about that but fortunately it wasn't damaged. Good idea though and probably worth $10... however I'd think they would accept a damaged box return.
amazon had them for $160 and free shipping. They charge tax in WA so total was $174.

There's 5 models I know of that are available:
*Zenith DVB-318 Component Video & DVI-D (HD...480p/720p/1080i) // S-video & Composite Video (SD) (Yahoo $156.00) Not really sure of the true 1080i support thru Component Video. Actual owners manual states 480p/720p/1080i thru DVI-D only but in another area gives a tip for selecting t 1080i thru Component/DVI-D output.???
*Samsung DVD HD-841 [Faroudja] DVI (HD...480p/720p/768p/1080i) // Component Video (480i/480p only) // S-video & Composite Video (SD) (Yahoo $159.66-$199.99)
*Samsung DVD HD-931 [Faroudja] DVI (HD...480p/720p/768p/1080i) // Component Video (480i/480p only) // S-video & Composite Video (SD) (Yahoo $178.88-$299.99)
*Samsung DVD HD-941 [Faroudja] Component Video, DVI, & HDMI (HD...480p/720p/768p/1080i) // S-Video & Composite Video (SD) (Yahoo $342.53-$345.99)
*Denon DVD-5900 [Faroudja] Component Video(x2), DVI, & IEEE1394(x2) (HD...480p/720p/768p/1080i) // S-Video(x2), Composite Video(x2) (SD) (Yahoo $1,507.55-$1,999.99)

Actually there is another. The momitsu 880, I have it and it works great. 1080i or 720p, no macrovision or region (via a known remote control key sequence), upgradeable firmware via CD, plus does xvid, wma, divx, mp3, et al. It was right around $200

Do you have a spec sheet you can share or an URL so I can check it out.
The Denon is also flash upgradable...It has a Denon link and RS232 port as well.

They also have an 880N that includes a 10/100 Ethernet so you can play movies anywhere in the house, wirelessly, etc (plus web radio, music, etc.)

Nope, it is NTSC/PAL/SECAM and does conversion correctly between PAL region discs and NTSC. My European discs work beautifully.

The only thing I don't like about it, is its cheap - really really cheap remote. But since I program everything to my learning remote anyway it wasn't an issue. Otherwise it is a very recommendable unit. Check out one of their resellers in the US (HKFilms), they have the info on their webpage on how to use the "service menu" to change region to 0, turn off macrovision, etc.
