I signed up for Dish through the internet. I am thinking about making the switch to DirectTV. The problem is that the process seems to be more confusing and I need advice on the following...
1) Is there an online dealer that has a comprehensive site that explains the process and packages?

If you order online, then the receivers/dish is shipped to you. You then schedule the install with a local installer. In most cases, they will probably reuse the same dish location and wiring. My dish is located at the roofline of a two-story house, and the installer was going to keep the existing Dish Network dishes in place, and the removal cost was $20. Fine, better you than me on top of ladder.
The current promotions have you getting the standalone receivers free. If you get a DirecTiVo, then there is a charge for that receiver. If additional cabling is required, then it will probably be tacked to the exterior of the house. If you want lines fished down walls, then it's an additional charge.
I also recommend that you get a phase III dish even if you don't need it. It makes you HD ready and includes a self-powered switch as part of the dish.
Just another person to add to my list of unhappy Dish Net subscribers. I am seeing almost one per day now. when you do make it, we welcome you to the home of the real DVR.

Cannot say that I am REALLY unhappy, just longing for NFL in HD, and the NFL Channel. Also looking for a DVR that can record in HD.
What I did/do like about Dish is that it was very easy to order, and I did not have to purchase any recievers. Coming from cable, that was familiar to me.
You might want to check out www.valueelectronics.com and see what deal they can do for you. They will take care of setting up the install, or if you want to do it yourself they will give you a $50 credit once you show them you actually signed up for D*.
I would recommend Value Electronics as well. I got a good deal from them, and they were available to answer any questions and quickly take care of any problems.

The HD-DirecTiVo is currently the only receiver that records in HD in both OTA and Satellite. You will also be installing a Phase III dish. And, since they like giving deals to new subscribers, additional SD receivers are free.
The current programming promotion has you paying for NFL Sunday Ticket and giving you Total Choice Premium (which is an excellent promotion even if you don't like football).
Just pre-plan ahead of time.
