I just did a search on e-bay for the old dishplayers - 7100's are now selling for $100-$150, which must mean the hacks can't get through the countermeasures by E*. I'm glad I sold mine in January 2004 for $329 - funny thing was the guy who bought it was from Puerto Rico - I bet he's been cut off if he was a hacker.

Ahh not that I weant to see it occur but no doubt eventually someone will crack the thing. At the echo 6 launch I was warned a hacker worked for E, trouble was they didnt know who it was...

did the ECM make the boxes junk?? I ask because a friend talked of buying another one, he already uses one and I dont want to see him struck with a unusable box...

what should I tell him??

They're not junk to folks who PAY for programming, only the hackers!

Does the ECM do permanent damage to the card or box? A LONG time ago there was a rumor E could do permanent damage but I dont know it it was true, and franly dont follow the hackers activities much at all.

Can peopple still safely purchase and dishplayer without concern if it was previously used for hacking?

The easiest way to answer that question is to tell your friend to call E* with the receiver and smart card number and see if it can be activated and transferred (they should also confirm that the balance is $0). When the receiver is hooked up they should be able to receive the information channels.

Does this mean I can pick up a 6000 (HD receiver) cheap anytime soon ?? I found out that hackers like those receivers and that's why they're so high in price on eBay....

Ok once again the non hacker crowd gets things backwares and mixed uped.

If the box has been ecmed there is no legal way of fixing it. Dish will not fix an ecm box if you bought it .

There is a way of fixing them but no longer a easy way it involves a expensive piece of hardware that few people have.

The method hackers were using no longer work as dish fixed that security whole with in 24 hours of the famous ECM on July 20th

They have droped down in price so much because now all they are... is a slow box with a alot of bugs that has a nice interface. Only reason why is because they were never hit . now they are as vulerable as any other dish network box.

The 6000 will probably not go down in price any time soon

As it still has yet to be ecmed by dish network and even if it was it si stilll the only highdef box that still uses a access card. There is the 5000 but it no longer capable of hd since they switched hd formats.

the 5000 is still good for over the air hdtv ( i belive with the proper module)

You will see a big push on the 6000 and the 721.

YOu will also see alot of people grabbing fta recivers that share the same processor as dish network boxes and by illegal means making them decode dish networks signal.

The 5000 has NEVER been good for OTA HDTV - the only OTA tuner it has is your plain, old fashioned NTSC (analog) tuner.

Just goes to show that Dish really needs to finish the card swap and turn off the old encryption stream.

My DP is running fine and I still love it. Maybe I should have sold mine for a grip of money which I got for free:O) naaaaa I'll keep it! How do you think the ones who paid 300 dollars for them are feeling now? Yuck

I sold both of mine on ebay some months ago at a handsome profit. If the buyers were planning on using them for illegal purposes, I hope they got what they deserved.

I dig my dishplayer. It really was pretty painful in the early days 4 years ago when I got it, but its my stable receiver now - my 921 might skip a recording, but my dishplayer doesn't.

If Dish cuts them off, they'd better offer me something as stable in exchange.

Yeah I still have 3 of them on a active subscription.... If dish decided to can them they better replace them with 721s for free.

I will not pay for a dvr fee especially after paying for Lifetime ptv fee that ended up not being for a life...

I was thinking about selling my 7200s a while ago and decided not too because i love them too much. Figureing that i could go get 300 for them and then go get 721s under there promotion.
