I could have sworn I was ranting and raving about how bad the lease program is and how it was better to own a DVR than lease it, and now I can't find my post.......any ideas?

Do you mean THIS (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=31050)? If so, it's in the other forum.

Nope, I was comparing having a DVR to own vs lease since I could load it up with movies, and I would save a lot of money by not buying DVDs, and having to not worry about my kids ruining DVDs and that I wouldn't have to pull it back out of my entertainment center. Someone else was saying how much better it was to lease.....
Thanks for looking tho.

That's what I did, and I couldn't find it. Can't find the thread either, so I have no idea whether my post didn't take or not. And I spent about 20 minutes looking last night with no luck.......Twilight Zone............. :(

Of course, when your Dish DVR wipes out all of your recordings, you'll probably re-think that idea.

Then that pretty much defeats your original argument based upon storing movies on the hdd, no?

Not really, because once I get a DVD burner, I will backup all my DVDs since the kids have ruined about 1/3 of them. Also, I plan on making a backup of the HD on the DVR anyway by mirroring to another HD. Been a computer tech for 15 years, so I have ahd a lot of crash and burns over the years.

Problem with DVD burners: If you want to copy a DVD, you'd have to have something like DVD XCopy, which has vanished from the marketplace, and whose developer has gone out of business due to legal problems. DVD burning software currently in the marketplace can't import/export copy protected DVD's. The fair use doctrine that applies to printed media hasn't been upheld in the courts for DVD's to my knowledge.

No argument there. It's a great idea. .
But, if you are moving the stuff to DVD, then using hdd storage as an argument for choosing owning over leasing is a moot point.

Yeah, but if I am leasing it, and screw it up, I gotta buy it anyway. Also, there are programs that let you rip DVDs, copy protected or not. You also have to keep in mind that the really good, OLD VCRs do not have the copy protection stuff, and will actually copy a DVD with no problem. It's the never one that get screwed up. Burning a DVD from a DVR is not that complicated, and I don't use WinDoZe, so there are ways around copy protection. It's not illegal as long as I only make a copy for my own use. Of course, the courts are still fighting over the DMCA, so it shall be interesting.
