View Full Version : Mounting a large DBS dish to an old C-Band pole?

I would like your suggestions on how to mount a large (36") Ku-band dish to a C-band pole.

I have a great plumb pole that used to hold up my C-Band dish, and it would be a perfect spot for the new Ku-band dish, but the pole has like a 5" OD, which is way too large for standard Ku-band mounting hardware.

Are there any mounts out there that will attach to the C-band pole, and then allow me to put a 1 5/8" pole in the other part of the mount? I'm going to be using a motor attached to the 1 5/8" pole, then attached to the 36" dish.

Right now, I have an 18" dish on a 1 5/8" pole attached to the 5" OD pole with just 3 large hose clamps. This has been a great solution for the past 3 years. But I have a feeling that the 36" dish plus motor will be a bigger weight than the hose clamp solution will take. Plus, there are vent pipe mounts out there that will do 5" OD mounting, but they look way too flimsy to support 20 pounds of dish.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Seems to me that you might want to talk to the local welder. :)

ANYTHING can be fabricated with a couple hunks of steel and a welding rig. :D

In this case, it's probably about a 30 minute job to weld a hunk of small pipe to a hunk of big pipe - and that includes setup.

That's a good idea. I might consider just getting a Bernzomatic or something, and fusing what I have together.

I still would think that this is something that people do with some regular basis though. I'd rather get something fitted for the purpose if such a thing exists.

I mounted a Dish 500 dish to the pole I used to use for my C-band dish just by using very large hose clamps. The kind that are metal straps with a bolt that you tighten. It works fine so far.

It may be possible that a plumbing store could help you out - but by the time you fit everything together, you've spent more time and effort than just welding something on. I don't know much about brazing (I assume that's what you're talking about doing with your Bernzomatic), so I don't know if it'd be strong enough.

Drill two holes through the large pipe. Take the small pipe and place inside the large pipe and mark the location of the two holes on the smaller pipe. Remove the small pipe and drill through the marks. Attach the small pipe with self tapping screws. :D I have done this many times.

Good answer Richard! Wish I'd thought of it. :)

Cool. Thanks for the tips everyone. I will have some time this weekend to play around with it. Good to know that the Dish 500 with hose clamps is working out though. :)
