All I can say is WOW! Only had it for a day, but I am so far totally impressed. I've only toyed with a relative's Tivo previously and never got into it's functions. Coming from someone who has used a TV capture card on a PC and been involved in distribution and receipt of digital video (music videos and performances mostly - not a movie pirate) for like 6 years now - I feel right at home and I can't believe it's taken this long to get one. This is too cool. I can't wait to mod this thing and check out the possibilities of hacks for export (I know that's taboo here and I'm not asking how to do it here either).

Anyway, thanks to all who provided info. We got the two Phillips 35 hour, the 3 LNB Oval dish, and install for $45 with shipping. Picked up another 35 hour Phillips at Best Buy for around $80 and the installer brought us a $80 splitter. Not bad at all for what we got and then they have the NFL pass special for programming to boot.

If you're on Dish - man, I would strongly consider making the switch. Tivo’s functionality is so cool. I called to see what kind of deal Dish would make us on upgrades to DVR and they wouldn't come close to what we have now. It would have cost more - we wouldn't own the equipment (no hacking) and I seriously doubt it would have held a candle to this.

While I’m at it – I know a relative that’s interested in switching. What’s the hottest deal on equipment right now. I’ll search, but if anyone doesn’t mind – that would be nice of you.

Congratulations on your new toys, Fastfwd! It’s a nice breath of fresh air to change services and see what it’s like on the other side of the fence. The DirecTiVo is an amazing unit, I couldn't lve without mine, enjoy!

Ditto. TiVo is one of the few electronics products where the wives make their husbands buy it for them. I speak from experience -- Mrs. G made me got one, then her parents bought two!

Strangely enough, my wife refuses to use the Tivo features. She told me that she likes watching the commercials. Plus, there's something that she likes to watch each night of the week and time-shifting holds no appeal to her.

Go figure...
