Cost and monthly fees aside, what is the best Dish non dvr unit? Would pairing that with a tivo be more stable than a 510?

I don't think the 510 has any stability problems at all, to be honest. It's really the newer PVR/DVR receivers like the 522 and 921 that still have software kinks. The 510 runs the same software that the 501 and 508 run, and it's been through a number of iterations, so it's pretty solid at this point.

The 510 is a solid DVR. I have had mine for a few months now and have had very few problems. (all minor ones)

I like it better than when I had cable and my stand alone Tivo, because it is much faster, MUCH faster, and I do not have to worry any longer about dropped channels, and not getting what I wanted recorded.

I've got a 301 with a TiVo.

Advantages:
* Better TiVo interface and remote
* Name-based recording
* Can avoid monthly fees with "lifetime" (whose?) subscription
* Unrelated whistles and bells of remote scheduling, networking, music/picture service

Disadvantages:
* Indirect remote control means channel changes fail now and then
* Picture quality isn't as good as an integrated DVR
* TiVo guide data isn't perfect, mainly on fringe channels
* Won't recover from any "press arrow keys" situation without 301 remote

Hope this helps!

Oh yeah, one more thing:

Advantage:
* If you ever (gasp) leave Dish for D* or cable, the E* DVR will be a paperweight

Disadvantage:
* If TiVo folds, your TiVo will be a paperweight.

Roll them dice!

I agree with carload completely...

I Have 3 recievers. 1 522 1 510 and 1 311... On the 311 i have a SA tivo (upgraded majorly) and it works great except for the lower quality and the lack of the warning of the press up or down mesages... that made me miss 2 recordings. the 510 ive never had any problems with other than it needing 1 reboot because a storm knocked out the reception and all the recievers but this one was back. reboot fixed it. the 522 I have to reboot about daily to keep it running stabily.. i usually do during a comercial nothing big. overall once most of the bugs are worked out of the 522 it will be superior. however right now the 510 is the best dvr in terms or quality and satability. the Tivo is great and works perfectly but i am a quality of picture nut and prefer the all digital picture.

If you leave E*, you can sell the receiver, so it's not a paperweight. If TiVo folds, it WILL be a paperweight. My guess is that TiVo will be bought by a cable company (or go under) as they continue to falter....unless they get a deal with a cable company to license the product.

Or, if you disconnect, you can load it up, leave it plugged in, and watch what you had recorded whenever you want(assuming you don't lease it). My 721 will hold about 60 1 1/2 hour movies, and no DVDs to worry about, and since I am paying for the service, I don't have to buy the DVDs to begin with.
